The season 13 finale of “When Calls the Heart” delivered a major milestone for longtime couple Elizabeth Thornton and Nathan Grant. After weeks of anticipation, Nathan finally proposed to Elizabeth in the final moments of the episode, setting up a major storyline heading into season 14.
The Hallmark drama had been building toward the moment for several seasons. Now that the engagement is official, fans are wondering what comes next for the beloved Hope Valley couple. With season 14 already confirmed and production underway, the proposal could signal an even bigger chapter for the series.
‘When Calls the Heart’ Season 13 Finale: Nathan Proposes to Elizabeth
The proposal unfolded during a quiet moment following a Hope Valley celebration. Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) and Nathan (Kevin McGarry) climbed to the top of the town’s water tower to spend time together.
Nathan had attempted to propose several times throughout the season, but the timing never seemed right. This time, however, he decided it was the perfect moment.
“You’re like silver,” Nathan told Elizabeth during the emotional scene. “You reflect back the best in anyone lucky enough to stand in your light.”
He then revealed a silver ring designed to represent their blended family.
“I wanted four stones. One for each of us because we’re a family,” Nathan explained, referring to Allie Grant (Jaeda Lily Miller) and Elizabeth’s son Little Jack Thornton (Hyland Goodrich).
Nathan then asked Elizabeth to walk with him “through this valley for the rest of our days.”
Elizabeth responded with a kiss, prompting Nathan to point out she had not technically answered the question yet.
“Yeah, but I was gonna,” Elizabeth replied before the couple shared another kiss.
The engagement marked a long-awaited moment for viewers who have followed the relationship since the pair officially got together at the end of season 11.
WCTH Season 14: What the Engagement Means for Hope Valley
The relationship between Elizabeth and Nathan has been developing for several seasons on “When Calls the Heart.” Throughout season 13, Nathan prepared for the proposal by seeking the blessing of Elizabeth’s mother, Charlotte Thornton (Brooke Shields), and visiting Jack Thornton’s grave.
During that visit, Nathan promised that he would always take care of Elizabeth and Little Jack.
With the engagement now official, many viewers are wondering whether a wedding could be part of season 14’s storyline. The possibility could bring a major celebration to Hope Valley, especially as familiar faces continue returning to the series.
‘When Calls the Heart’ Season 14: Brian Bird Teases Future Storylines
Series co-creator and executive producer Brian Bird recently addressed the future of Nathan and Elizabeth’s story during an interview with the outlet Devotional, suggesting that the couple’s journey is far from finished.
“A lot of people will talk about courtships and say that when they are finally married, the storyline is over,” Bird explained to Parade. “But I don’t think a potential engagement or marriage is the end to their storytelling.”
Instead, Bird said upcoming seasons will explore how the couple adjusts to their evolving family dynamic.
“Future seasons will focus on a show about how this couple is going to adjust to being a family now,” he said. “I’m excited as I peek in right now for Season 14—it is as fun and epic as this season. The audience needs to buckle up and not get too comfortable with Nathan and Elizabeth—because there is more coming.”
When asked directly whether a wedding could happen in season 14, Bird offered a playful response.
“No comment—the writing is on the wall,” he said.
Bird also praised the longevity of the series, which has continued to grow well into its thirteenth season.
“What other show can say in Season 13 that it’s getting better?” Bird said. “Sometimes you feel you are losing steam, but we don’t feel that way about WCTH; it’s only growing and building with each new chapter.”
