As Brendan Fraser reflects on his impressive past in film, he describes one incident that nearly ended his entire career.
Brendan Fraser Suffered an Accident While Filming ‘The Mummy’
While Brendan Fraser played the heroic Rick O’Connell in “The Mummy” movies, some of the stunts proved to be pretty grueling.
In the first film, there is a scene where Rick is sentenced to death by hanging. Though Fraser survived to tell the tale, filming nearly ended his life.
“Brendan Fraser recalls a stunt he did for ‘The Mummy’ that nearly cut his career short 💀” Film Refined captioned a new Instagram clip. “Luckily, he lived to tell the story and is still incredibly positive. He holds no hard feelings which shows the type of man he is, but how scary. What a legend!”
“There was a stunt with a rope around the neck, a stunt man doing it with proper safety gear and a wide shot, then my turn to match,” Fraser explained, clearly uncomfortable with the entire idea.
The actor remembered that the director wasn’t pleased with the shot, so he asked for the tension to be increased. Fraser grew even more uneasy with the rope around his neck.
“So I went up on the balls of my feet like a ballet dancer, which I am not, and tried to get on my toes because the tension kept going up. I couldn’t sustain it, but the man upstairs didn’t know that. So I relaxed back into my feet and the tension,” the actor continued.
Between the tension pulling him upward and his feet relaxing downward, Fraser began to choke.
The Actor Laughs About the Incident in Hindsight
As the shoot continued, Brendan Fraser began feeling disoriented. He remembered feeling as if someone turned a giant volume button down.
“Next I knew, the world was sideways,” “The Mummy” star continued. “I thought, ‘That’s curious.’ There’s dirt in my mouth and my ear. And my arm is twisted all weird, man, my shin really hurts. Everyone’s quiet, whereas before they had the extras screaming and shouting and suddenly, pin drop quiet.”
Fraser remembers the crew members waking him up and joking that he wanted to go home.
“But look, there’s no blame attached to any of this,” he laughed. “If anything, it’s my own stupidity for not checking it out, thinking myself to be invincible, which I learned, you are not!”
