The 1998 film “Practical Magic,” starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as sisters Gillian and Sally Owens, is a fan favorite, which is why there is so much excitement around the sequel, “Practical Magic 2,” set for release in September.
Nicole Kidman Teases ‘Practical Magic 2’
Ahead of the film’s release, its stars have been teasing the project, and on Monday, August 17, Kidman posted a gorgeous photo on Instagram of herself in a skin-tight orange floral dress, holding a fluffy black cat. In the caption, she wrote, “Just a girl and her black cat @practicalmagicmovie.” The official “Practical Magic” Instagram account replied, “A magical bond.”
Other reactions include, “Some things never change in this house,” “absolutely gorgeous,” and “thank you for sharing.”
In a chat with Ariana Grande for Interview magazine in November 2025, Kidman discussed reprising her role as Gillian. “We had an incredible cast,” she said. In addition to Bullock, the cast of the sequel includes Joey King, who will play the role of Sally’s daughter Kylie, and Maisie Williams, as older daughter Antonia Owens. Gillian has a gorgeous black cat. “A lot of times I don’t have fun when I’m filming because it’s more …,” Grande finished her sentence, saying, “Emotionally draining.”
Kidman continued, “Yeah. But I have such a strong relationship with all those women, so I felt protected and loved. It was just very, very safe.” She added, “To come back to something so many years later and go, ‘We’re still able to get this movie made at a big big studio like Warner’s,’ and that Sandy and I were able to produce it and get it made, is insane.”
Why Nicole Kidman & Sandra Bullock Reprised Their ‘Practical Magic 2’ Roles
As for what inspired Bullock and Kidman to reprise their roles and take on a sequel to the classic film? Kidman revealed in an interview with British Vogue in August that it was their fans. “It was the fans,” she said. “It was an actual demand from people. They were like, ‘Do we get this? Can we please?’”
“Then it was whether Sandy wanted to do it,” Kidman said. “Let’s put it this way. I’m like: ‘Why not?’ and she’s like: ‘Why?’” Bullock commented on Kidman’s retelling of how the film came together. “Nic and I are very different. But our differences create the most fabulous dynamic,” she said. “Whether we are fighting or loving on each other, we need each other. To watch how that shows itself on screen even surprises me. You can’t explain ‘chemistry’; it just is. And we have it.”
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in April, Bullock confirmed that she had declined to appear in a sequel. “Pam and Mike had reached out, saying, ‘Look, we really want to make Practical Magic 2.’ I said, ‘It’s not the right time,’ and then I called Denise Di Novi, our producing partner,” Bullock said of Warner Bros. co-chair and CEO Pam Abdy and co-CEO Mike De Luca.”
She continued, “We’d produced the first one together. And I said: ‘I have an idea about what I think ‘Practical Magic 2’ should be and what we can say.’ And when I told her everything, she goes: ‘That’s already in the second book [by author Alice Hoffman],’ and so that made me excited.”
