Netflix Cancels New Show After a Single Season

Streaming giant Netflix has cancelled another television series after just one season. The sitcom “Miss Governor,” which made its debut on Netflix in 2025 and was also previously known as “She the People,” was created by Tyler Perry and Niya Palmer, and follows the character of Antoinette Dunkerson who becomes Mississippi’s first Black lieutenant governor and must deal with a variety of challenges in her new role.

Tyler Perry’s ‘Miss Governor’ Has Been Quietly Axed

“Miss Governor” aired across two parts between May and August of 2025. Originally titled “She the People,” it went through a mid-season name change but that move seemingly didn’t do enough to change its fate.

According to a report from What’s on Netflix, the show has been shelved with little fanfare. The report indicates that Netflix “currently has no plans to renew ‘Miss Governor’ for a full second season, effectively canceling the series after a single, two-part run.”

Meanwhile, star Terri J. Vaughn — who appears alongside the likes of Jade Novah, Kevin Thoms, and Jo Marie Payton — confirmed the cancellation in a video posted to Facebook

Speaking in the video, the actor confirmed that she has known about the axing “for some time” and that she is “quite heartbroken” that she won’t get to continue the sitcom.

“Mainly because I really worked my [expletive] off to make that show come to fruition,” Vaughn explained. “The intention behind the show was just so beautiful and purposeful… impactful. I wanted to be able to tell those stories through that character.”

She continued, “The most heartbreaking part of the show not coming back is all the people involved.” Vaughn went on to praise her fellow cast and the crew behind the show, referring to them as a family.

Information released by Netflix reveals that “Miss Governor” failed to find a large audience. It never made it into the weekly global Top 10 and accumulated just 35.6 million viewing hours.

Netflix Has Already Canceled Several Shows in 2026

Netflix has been on something of a cancellation spree in recent weeks, putting an end to a string of shows.

This includes the battle-royal series “Alice in Borderland,” the critically acclaimed animated spin-off “Terminator Zero,” and the comedy show “The Vince Staples Show” after two seasons.

Perhaps the most high-profile cancellation came in the form of “The Abandons.” Meant to rival “Yellowstone” as a Western drama series, the show starred Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson as the matriarchs of two competing families. Like “Miss Governor,” it only managed a single season before being shelved.
