Netflix Cancels Critically Acclaimed Series

“Terminator Zero” premiered on Netflix in 2024 to high praise from critics, with many calling it one of the best anime shows on the platform. Sadly, almost two years later, one of the creatives behind the beloved series has confirmed that Netflix did not renew it.

Netflix Has Canceled Anime Series ‘Terminator Zero’

Mattson Tomlin, who created “Terminator Zero” and served as its showrunner, revealed the show’s fate following the multiyear wait since its first season. Notably, Tomlin’s confirmation came after a fan asked about the series’ future.

He stated on X, “It was cancelled. The critical and audience reception to it was tremendous, but at the end of the day, not nearly enough people watched it. I would’ve loved to deliver on the Future War I had planned in seasons 2 and 3, but I’m also very happy with how it feels contained as is.”

Fans then reacted to the sad news that Netflix had canceled “Terminator Zero.” One person wrote, “A shame. #TerminatorZero undoubtedly has been the best entry to the franchise since T2. It offered fresh, new perspectives and commentary. To be honest, I hope James Cameron finds out and decides to help bring your vision to life rather than another live-action film.”

Someone else wrote, “That’s such a shame, it really was a fantastic series. Thanks for the amazing story you did give us.”Another fan expressed disappointment, saying, “Unfortunate. Zero had its flaws, but was easily the strongest entry since T2. Felt very Terminator-y, yet had new ideas to bring to the table so it wasn’t just a(nother) rehash of T2.”

Finally, a different X user suggested that Tomlin continue the story outside of Netflix. They wrote, “I was hoping for season 2. Maybe you should write season 2 in comic book form.”

The Series Had Solid Reviews From Critics & Fans

Netflix released “Terminator Zero” in August 2024. Upon release, the series received glowing reviews from critics and also pleased audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, the anime has a healthy 87% rating from professional critics. Audiences gave the show an overall rating of 79%.

“Terminator Zero” also has good reviews on Metacritic, where critics rated it 79 out of 100, making it “generally favorable.” The show has a 6.5 out of 10 rating among users on the platform, based on more than 100 reviews.

The show features voicework from Timothy Olyphant, Sonoya Mizuno, André Holland, Armani Jackson, Rosario Dawson, and Yasuhiro Mamiya.
