Netflix Provides Update About the Future of Star-Studded Western Drama

According to reports, Netflix has officially canceled its recent Western drama series, which features an all-star cast such as Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson. Deadline indicates that “The Abandons” has not been picked up for a second season, meaning that it has come to a conclusion less than two months after the first season aired.

Netflix Cancels Western ‘The Abandons’ After A Single Season

It may only be a few weeks into 2026 but Netflix is seemingly being cutthroat about the projects it is moving forward with. A report by Deadline reveals that Netflix has canceled “The Abandons” after just one season, alongside a selection of other shows.

Netflix recently released its semi-annual report that delves into the popularity and viewing figures of content on the streaming service. The What We Watched the Second Half of 2025 suggested that “The Abandons” had performed fairly well in terms of viewership.

Following its release on December 4, the show went on to attract almost 20 million views in the first 28 days. However, that has seemingly not been enough to save the big-budget production. “The Abandons” also failed to make a splash with critics, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 30%.

The series is set during the 1950s in the Washington Territory of the Old West and focuses on two competing families. Heady portrays devout Irish matriarch Fiona Nolan as she battles against silver mine owner Constance Van Ness, who is played by Anderson. The product of  “Sons of Anarchy” and “The Shield” creator Kurt Sutter, who left weeks before the end of filming.

Anderson has previously been involved in another high-profile Netflix show as part of the main cast of “Sex Education.” Meanwhile, Heady is set to stay on the streamer with a leading role in the upcoming comedy detective series from “Black Mirror” creator Charlie Brooker.
