“American Idol” contestant Bryant Thomas had more on his mind than his audition during the season 24 premiere. After getting through his cover for “Against All Odds” by Phil Collins, Thomas’ girlfriend, Alyona, rushed into the audition room with his family.
Once the judges pushed him through to the Hollywood round, Thomas dropped down to one knee in front of his girlfriend. With a ring in his hand and love in his heart, Thomas proposed to Alyona in front of millions watching from home. Not only did he receive a “yes” from all three judges, but he also heard a “yes” from his now-fiancée.
Bryant Thomas Proposes to Girlfriend Alyona
During his surprise proposal, Thomas explained to Alyona that when he always told her how he intended to finish this life with her by his side, he meant it.
“So, I told you, you know, when we started this whole journey, you know, that you were the one for me,” he said to Alyona. “To be honest, whether I got a golden ticket or not, I was gonna do this — and I just want you to know that my journey started with you and it’s gonna end with you — I promise you that.”
Through the shock and excitement, Alyona leaned in to kiss her boyfriend to accept his marriage proposal and proudly slide her new ring on her finger.
Before the newly engaged couple walked out to celebrate, the judges congratulated the pair for their inspirational love for each other. Lionel Richie also reassured the contestant that with his talents, there’s no telling how far he will go in the music industry.
Bryant Thomas’ Unique Story
DisneyAlthough his proposal was shocking enough, Thomas’ unique audition was also out of the norm for “American Idol.” Despite having an online social media following who’s aware of his impressive chops, not one of his fans had ever seen his face before his audition aired.
Up until his audition, his social media supporters only heard his voice, as he kept his appearance in the dark. During his viral singing videos, his fiancée would do miscellaneous things in front of the camera while he sang his heart out in the background — oftentimes while in the shower.
While he knew he’d show his face eventually during his “American Idol” debut, Thomas sang the first part of “Against All Odds” from behind a pillar so the cameras and judges couldn’t see his face.
As he sang the lyrics “take a good look at me now,” Thomas courageously showed the judges — and America — his face for the first time. Now, his fans will know exactly who he is as he continues his journey on “American Idol.”
