Chris Daughtry Mourns Famous Friend He’s Known Since ‘American Idol’

Many rock music fans and artists were devastated to learn about the death of 3 Doors Down frontman Brad Arnold on February 7, 2026. Among them was “American Idol” alum Chris Daughtry, who wrote a touching tribute the following day, revealing that Arnold was “one of the first true ‘rock stars’ I ever met when I was a rookie in this industry.'”

Daughtry posted multiple photos of himself with Arnold, who died at age 47 following a battle with stage 4 kidney cancer, and wrote, “Fresh off of ‘Idol’ and into the throws of writing and recording my first album I had the opportunity to write with Brad. I will never forget how kind and complimentary he was of my writing at the time (which I thought was rudimentary at best) and how much confidence that gave me going forward.”

Chris Daughtry Says Brad Arnold ‘Embodied Kindness’

In Daughtry’s tribute about Arnold, he recalled joining him on tour years before and wrote, “We would keep in touch and meet and events over the years and talk about doing shows together. Years later we would meet again to embark on a co-headline US tour that I will never forget.”

“I laughed more on a daily basis on that tour than any other tour before or since,” he continued. “He was always telling us jokes in between fans coming into the meet and greet, so most of the time when fans would meet us I had tears in my eyes from laughing at Brad. Haha!”

“He embodied kindness and respect with every person he came into contact with,” Daughtry wrote of Arnold, “whether it was a fan, crew, local stage hand, random venue employees, it didn’t matter. I will always cherish the moments I got to spend with him on stage and off stage. I’m gonna miss you brother. Rest easy. I love you.💜💜💜”

Daughtry Replaced 3 Doors Down on Tour After Brad Arnold’s Diagnosis

Daughtry skyrocketed to fame during the fifth season of “American Idol” in 2006. Nearly 20 years later, when Arnold was diagnosed with cancer in May 2025, Daughtry’s band stepped in to take over for 3 Doors Down on the Summer of ’99 Tour, alongside bands including Nickelback, Creed, and Vertical Horizon.

Arnold announced his diagnosis via social media on May 7, sharing in a video, “Got some not so good news for you today. I’ve been sick (since) a couple of weeks ago, and then went to the hospital and got checked out and had actually got the diagnosis that I had a clear cell renal carcinoma, that it metastasized into my lungs and it’s Stage 4, and that’s not real good.”

On February 7, his band announced his passing in a statement that said, “With his beloved wife Jennifer and his family by his side, he passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, in his sleep after his courageous battle with cancer.”

“As a founding member, vocalist, and original drummer of 3 Doors Down, Brad helped redefine mainstream rock music, blending post-grunge accessibility with emotionally direct songwriting and lyrical themes that resonated with everyday listeners,” the statement added.

Thousands of fans liked Daughtry’s comment on the post, which said, “Sending my love to the Arnold family. Rest easy brother. You will be missed💜💜💜”
