6 ‘American Idol’ Contestants Who Should Have Won

For over two decades, “American Idol” has helped launch music careers, crowned champions, and sparked endless debates. While we have seen many of the winners go on to have successful careers, fans still argue that some of the contestants were robbed of the title despite delivering standout performances, commercial appeal, or long-term staying power. We take a look back, and came up with six “American Idol” contestants who should have won the show during their season.

1. Adam Lambert (Season 8)

One of the biggest “should’ve won” contestants in “American Idol” history has to be Adam Lambert. His theatrical performances, powerhouse vocals, and undeniable star quality set him apart week after week.

While Kris Allen ultimately won season 8, Lambert didn’t just go away. His post-Idol career includes fronting Queen, making it clear he was the season’s breakout star.

2. Haley Reinhart (Season 10)

Haley Reinhart didn’t just sing on “American Idol,” she owned the stage every time she performed. She was a standout that season, and many fans thought she would go on to win it all.

Haley finished in third place and has gone on to have plenty of success since the show, including hit albums, and she even jumped into acting.

3. Clay Aiken (Season 2)

Season 2 was a battle between Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard.  Many fans believed Aiken’s consistency and connection with the audience should have earned him the win.

While he didn’t win, Clay has gone on to have a very successful career for a non-winning contestant. He has had multiple platinum albums and Broadway performances.

4. Katharine McPhee (Season 5)

Katharine McPhee had smooth vocals and an emotional delivery that made her a fan favorite. She seemed like a shoo-in to win season 5, but Ryan Seacrest ended up announcing Taylor Hicks as the winner during the finale.

Over time, many viewers have thought about that outcome, especially given McPhee’s steady career in music, television, and Broadway. This versatility arguably gave her the edge.

5. Jessica Sanchez (Season 11)

Life has been a rollercoaster ride for Jessica Sanchez. She first appeared on “America’s Got Talent” at the age of 10. She was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Jessica then appeared on season 11 of “American Idol,” losing in the finale to Phillip Phillips. She then came back to “AGT” last summer and finally got her victory, being named the winner of season 20. That vocal dominance finally paid off for the new mom.

6. David Archuleta (Season 7)

It was a battle of the Davids for season 7, but many fans thought David Archuleta would be the winner. His emotional performances and raw vulnerability won over a huge fanbase.

However, it was David Cook taking home the win. Since Idol, Archuleta has become more comfortable in his own skin, and he is riding a social media high right now.

So, which “American Idol” contestants do you think should have won their season?

  1. Katherine McPhee just wasn’t likable. For talent, I would have chosen Elliott Yamin from her season, who Simon said gave a masterclass in singing.
