Savannah Guthrie is officially back on the “Today” show after taking time off the NBC morning show to film her upcoming Wordle project.
“It’s nice to be back home,” Guthrie, 54, said during the Monday, Aug. 10, broadcast as she reunited with cohost Craig Melvin. Guthrie welcomed viewers to the show and thanked them for “starting your week with us.”
Melvin told Guthrie that the “Today” team “missed” her while she worked on the project before joking about the $905 million Powerball jackpot.
“Here’s the thing, you might not see me again,” Melvin quipped. “If I hit the Powerball, I’m playing tonight, if I hit it, SG, it was a fun ride while it lasted.”
Savannah Guthrie Returns After Wordle Assignment
Guthrie announced last month that she would step away from “Today” to film the network’s new Wordle game show. Jimmy Fallon executive produces the project alongside The New York Times.
“We’re going to shoot the whole season, and we’re super excited,” Guthrie said July 16. “Cannot wait for everyone to see it.”
Her return to “Today” comes after the journalist spent time working on the new project away from the morning show.
Guthrie Continues Seeking Answers About Mom
Guthrie’s brief absence from “Today” also comes amid the ongoing search for her mother, Nancy, who authorities reported missing in Arizona in February.
Nearly six months into the investigation, Guthrie made an emotional plea to the people responsible for her mother’s disappearance.
“Our family is in agony. We are in a nightmare that will not end. Nothing about our situation has changed,” Guthrie said in an Instagram video July 27. “So I’m asking you, begging you to do the right thing now. Make the right choice. Help us find her. Tell us where to look for her.”
She captioned the post, “Bring her home .”
Days later, Guthrie shared another emotional tribute to her mother, 84, on Instagram.
“This is our beautiful Mom,” she wrote Aug. 1. “Six months ago, someone took her out of her bed in the dead of night.”
Guthrie said her family has lived with “agony and despair” since Nancy disappeared and promised that they would continue searching for answers.
Savannah Guthrie Has Spoken About the Investigation
Guthrie previously took time away from “Today” after her mother’s disappearance, then returned to the show in April.
Since then, she has occasionally addressed the investigation while maintaining that she does not participate in “Today” coverage of the case.
“I don’t have any comment on this story. I’m not involved in our coverage, but I can’t pretend I’m not here,” Guthrie said in June.
She used the moment to encourage anyone with information to come forward.
“Somebody knows something,” she said. “This is the life my sister lives, that I live, that my brother lives and our extended families live, that our children live every day. We are in agony. We cannot be in peace.”
With Guthrie now back at the “Today” desk, she continues balancing her work with her family’s ongoing efforts to find answers about her mother.
