Keyla Richardson was a fan-favorite on “American Idol” season 24, easily making it to the Top 3 thanks to her powerhouse vocals. However, Richardson did not receive enough votes during the finale to win it all, leaving the singing competition in third place behind runner-up Jordan McCullough and winner Hannah Harper.
While Richardson did not win the season, that does not mean that her music dreams are over. Viewers have witnessed contestants from previous seasons who did not win find massive success after Idol. Jennifer Hudson? Adam Lambert? Chris Daughtry? Clay Aiken? All these stars continue to thrive in the entertainment world despite being on the Idol stage years ago.
Still, not everyone was satisfied with Richardson’s third-place finish, and of course, some of her biggest support came from her mom, who has been her biggest cheerleader.
Keyla Richardson’s Mom Speaks Out After Her Third-Place Finish on ‘American Idol’
DisneyKeyla Richardson’s mom, Katja Richardson, is speaking out after her daughter placed third on “American Idol” season 24. In a post on Facebook, Katja believed that her daughter was “robbed” of the Idol crown.
“My baby was robbed. She did not fail. She was robbed, I’m sorry I’m gonna say it!” Her post read.
Of course, her emotional response is one many parents can relate to, especially after watching their child make it so far in the competition.
Commenters on her post shared words of love and support for her daughter, with many pointing out that the exposure and opportunities will come flooding in just from being on the show.
“SHE ALREADY WON QUEEN!!! The opportunities made available to her now are LIFE CHANGING!!” A fan shared.
“We have to understand that this is just A Minor Setback For A MAJOR COMEBACK. GOD HAS A BLESSING WITH “KEYLA’S” NAME ALL OVER IT. THE BEST IS YET TO COME!!!” Another comment read.
“I truly believe that this has exposed her and Drew for big things! I am expecting the BIG! Her voice and talent will not be overlooked. Partnerships and promotion coming soon!!” A fan wrote.
Richardson Shares Hopes for a Promising Music Career After Idol
The “American Idol” season 24 finale kicked off with all three finalists taking the stage to sing a powerful rendition of Carrie Underwood’s “The Champion.” Following the performance, each contestant took the stage solo to perform a song by Alicia Keys, who was the final mentor of the season. For Richardson, she chose the song “Un-thinkable (I’m Ready),” which she shared was her anthem.
Later, the Top 3 sang a song dedicated to their hometown, and for Richardson, who hails from Pensacola, Florida, she chose to sing “I Love The Lord” by Richard Smallwood. It was an emotional performance that reflected her deep gospel roots.
After the first two rounds of performances, host Ryan Seacrest revealed that Richardson did not make the Top 2. Still, she went on to have an incredible performance with Jason Mraz, performing “I Won’t Give Up,” a fitting song to end her run on Idol.
After the finale, Richardson took to Instagram, where she promised her fans that this is just the start of something bigger for her. Sharing two photos of her on the Idol stage, she captioned it, “The journey has been amazing, we are just getting started 💛 #Idol.”
Richardson is set to return to her hometown of Pensacola, where a major celebration is in store to celebrate her “American Idol” journey.

With her mom acting like that she’ll be lucky if she goes anywhere!!! Thats called problem!! She didn’t see like a team player! Always stand offish!!
I agree! Her mom making comments like that will harm her career if she continues. The voting is fair. They were all amazing! Any of them would have been blessed to be in the top 10, let alone the top 3! Everyone has their favorites. She could end up being one of the biggest stars to ever come out of Idol. Her mother’s comment implies it was rigged. I don’t believe anyone in Idol history, related to a contestant, ever made a statement like that. I hope she apologizes, because that is really messed up. Anyone that was part of the contest has the capacity to have a great career. No one should ever think they’re better than anyone else. They all earned the right to be there.
What an attitude!! And it was so obvious she passed it on to her son. He was full of himself and inappropriately over the top! She was not the best choice.
She really thought the title was hers all along. Sorry her mom is a poor sport. Great example for her grandson.
This year had some really great talent. Hard to choose from, but attitude also plays a big part in ones voices.
Really, really now, really? In this situation, please address the Grand mother, not Kayla, as she showed grace and gratitude in her posts after her 3rd place finish. To include her son in this comment is very distasteful and disrespectful. He’s a child. He sang along with her as he was always at the rehearsals. If he was so over the top and with an attitude, why did they do a segment with him and Carrie?

Idol was pumping this girl right from the first week of competition.
Good singer but lucky to even finish 3rd. I think her son is the real star.
I didn’t vote for Keyla. Although she is a fantastic singer, she is self-centered. An example: Mother’s Day. When the other two singers said they wished ALL mother’s a wonderful Mother’s Day. Then they went on to thank their mother’s. Keyla, not once, wished all mother’s a wonderful MD, only wished her mother a great day. Also, during the season, she was VERY standoffish. She acted as if she had already won and that she as so much better than everyone else. That spoke volumes of her “playing well with the others.” That’s the reason she didn’t win.

I feel sorry for Keyla to have a mother that said this as it could bite her in the butt and end her career. First of all for someone her claimed to be a Christian, we do not speak that way about others.
