Keyla Richardson has emerged as one of the biggest breakout stars of “American Idol” 2026. Known for her powerhouse vocals, emotional performances, and inspiring personal story, Richardson quickly became a fan favorite throughout the competition. Here are five fast facts about the “American Idol” season 24 finalist.
1. She Comes From a Musical Family
During her time on “American Idol,” Keyla has talked openly about growing up in a musical household and being surrounded by gospel music. She says that singing in church played a huge role in shaping her voice and confidence as a performer.
You can sense that background in gospel music when she starts singing those emotional ballads. She has often taken us to church with her performances.
2. Support of Her Hometown
Richardson is a resident of Pensacola, Florida. It looks like she has received massive support from her community there.
Every week, the city posts on Instagram in support of Keyla. They call on people to vote, make signs in her support, and spread the message all around town. Those signs include nicknames for her fans, Keyhive, and renaming the city to Pensakeyla. They’ve definitely helped get her to the Top 3.
3. Singing Competition History
This isn’t Keyla’s first time competing on a singing competition show. In 2019, Richardson was on the ninth season of “Sunday Best,” a singing competition series on BET. While she did not win, she was a finalist.
Per TV Insider, Keyla told WEAR News, “It’s a completely different experience from BET to ‘American Idol.’ ‘American Idol’ is a fast-paced kind of TV show. It definitely prepared me for the platform, definitely groomed me to be an artist.”
Oddly enough, Jamal Roberts, who won season 23 of “American Idol,” also competed on “Sunday Best.” Roberts was a finalist in Season 10, but also did not win.
4. Her Son Is One of Her Biggest Fans
As we have all seen this season, Richardson’s son, Drew, happens to be one of his mom’s biggest fans. He has been in the audience for every performance, often singing along with her.
Things got really good for Drew when Carrie Underwood let him sit in her chair so he could watch his mom on the stage.
Later in Hawaii, Richardson dedicated her performance to her son. She said, “I want to let him know, no matter how grown he gets, I’m going to love him forever. Every day we’re getting one step closer to where we want to be.”
5. Lionel Richie Happens to Be a Huge Fan
While in Hawaii, Richardson absolutely shocked judge Lionel Richie with her performance. She sang “With a Little Help From My Friends” by The Beatles.
After her performance, Lionel couldn’t sit down. He was packing back and forth, saying, “I have never. I have never ever!”
Richie continued, “The place got blown up. That Janis Joplin sounding, Tina Turner sounding. I don’t know who you are, but that right there was the greatest performance I have ever seen on this stage. That was ridiculous.”
