Former “American Idol” judge Steven Tyler returned to the stage for a very special reason: he was among the musicians who paid tribute to the late Black Sabbath musician, Ozzy Osbourne. Osbourne died on July 22, and his family shared the news of his death in a heartfelt statement.
Steven Tyler Pays Tribute to Ozzy Osbourne
Ahead of the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, September 7, it was announced on Instagram that Aerosmith’s Tyler and Joe Perry would be performing. “We’re honoring Ozzy Osbourne at the 2025 #VMAs with performers @iamstevent & @joeperryofficial of @aerosmith,” the caption read. The post generated a lot of excitement.
Also part of the tribute was YUNGBLUD, who has honored Osbourne in many ways since his passing, and Nuno Bettencourt. The four superstars performed some of Osbourne’s biggest hits, and the reaction to their performance has been overwhelmingly positive.
Footage from the tribute performance was shared on the official VMAs Instagram account, and fans have flooded the comment section of the clips to share their thoughts. “I’m convinced Ozzy passed something on to Yungblud and now his spirit lives in him,” a fan wrote. “Great to see Tyler and Perry. And for Steven to sing Ozzy, that was a one off. Wow,” another person shared.
Other reactions include, “ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!!!!!!! Ozzy would be so proud,” “With confidence, Ozzy would be applauding this performance,” and “I feel so emotional, i want Steven stay here forever.”
Some fans have also remarked on how Tyler appeared visibly emotional during the tribute. “It seems to me or Steven had tears in his eyes at the end?” a fan wrote. “Very touching tribute.”
Steven Tyler Makes a Triumphant Return

This was a very special night for Tyler, but also for his fans, because in August 2024, he announced his decision to end touring because of damage to his vocal cords. “As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury,” a statement from Aerosmith read at the time, The Guardian reports.
It continued, “We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side. Sadly, it is clear that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision – as a band of brothers – to retire from the touring stage.”
