Re:ZERO Season 4 Episode 1 Delivers Garfield’s Heartbreaking Reunion and a Shocking Echidna Reveal

Some returns hit harder than anyone could have prepared for. Re:ZERO — Starting Life in Another World — is back, and Season 4’s opening episode wasted no time reminding fans exactly why this franchise holds a singular place in anime.

Episode 1 landed on Crunchyroll on April 8, 2026, simultaneously in Japanese and English for the first time in the series’ history. The season arrives with an entirely same-day dubbed cast and immediately delivers on the weight of three seasons’ worth of buildup.

Episode 1 Sets the Stage with a New Destination and a Cold, Precise Reveal

The episode opens in the aftermath of Priestella. Subaru and his allies survived the Witch Cult attack, but the cost was enormous. Rem remains in an unending sleep. Crusch Karsten has lost her memories. Julius Juukulius has lost his name. With few options remaining, Anastasia proposes a journey to the Pleiades Watchtower deep in the Augria Sand Dunes, where the all-knowing sage Shaula is said to reside. Even Reinhard van Astrea — the Sword Saint and one of Re:ZERO’s most formidable characters — admitted he could not breach the tower’s mysterious barrier no matter how long he walked toward it. Subaru also recruits Meili Portroute, long imprisoned, to help the group navigate the mabeast-filled desert ahead.

Then comes the episode’s sharpest moment. During a quiet fireside conversation, Subaru tells “Anastasia” directly that he knows she is not the real Anastasia. She confirms it immediately — she is Echidna, the Witch of Greed, wearing Anastasia’s body with her consent, and currently unable to return it. The admission sends Subaru into traumatic flashbacks. It is a gut punch delivered without spectacle.

Garfield’s Reunion Is the Scene of the Season So Far

The episode’s most affecting moment belongs not to Subaru, but to Garfield. In Season 3, he discovered his mother was alive — living an entirely new life, with no memory of him or their past. Episode 1 finally gives him the scene fans had been anticipating. He approaches her. She does not recognise him. He calls her “mom” and breaks down completely. She comforts him the way a mother would comfort any child in pain, unaware of who he really is. It is quiet, unhurried, and devastating. As Spring 2026’s anime season fills up with major premieres, Re:ZERO proves emotional depth still leads the conversation. Re:ZERO Season 4 streams weekly every Wednesday on Crunchyroll, with both sub and same-day dub available simultaneously.

5 Things to Know About Re:ZERO Season 4’s Opening Arc

  • The Pleiades Watchtower arc that Season 4 adapts is widely considered the darkest and most psychologically brutal arc author Tappei Nagatsuki has written — light novel readers describe it as the point where Re:ZERO stops feeling like a fantasy adventure and becomes something far closer to psychological horror
  • Garfield’s reunion with his mother in Episode 1 is one of the few moments in Season 4’s opening that the anime expanded beyond the source material — the scene was given more breathing room than in the light novel, and the payoff is considered one of the best additions the adaptation makes
  • Echidna currently controls Anastasia’s body with Anastasia’s full consent — she cannot return it without outside help, which is one of the secondary reasons the group is heading to the Watchtower alongside Subaru’s mission to restore Rem
  • Meili Portroute, recruited by Subaru in Episode 1, was last seen imprisoned after the events of Season 3 — her mabeast manipulation ability makes her one of the few characters capable of helping the group safely navigate the Augria Sand Dunes
  • Re:ZERO Season 4 streams every Wednesday on Crunchyroll with both the English sub and same-day English dub available simultaneously — the first time in the franchise’s history dub viewers have not had to wait
