‘Big Brother’ Fans Want More From the House Themes Ahead of Season 28

Fan-favorite competition series, “Big Brother,” loves a bold theme… until it doesn’t. Every summer, the show rolls out a flashy concept designed to shape the season. Something that promises to shake up strategy, stir paranoia, and give the house a personality of its own. And for a minute? It works. The premiere hits, the houseguests react, and fans start imagining all the ways it could evolve.

Then somewhere along the line, the theme quietly fades into the background. And let’s be real; that’s where the frustration starts to creep in. Because the ideas are good. The execution just doesn’t always follow through.

The Themes of Past ‘Big Brother’ Seasons

Looking back, the pattern is hard to ignore.

  • Season 20: “BB App Store”
  • Season 21: “Camp BB”
  • Season 23: “BB Beach Club”
  • Season 24: “BB Motel”
  • Season 25: “BB Multiverse”
  • Season 26: “BB AI”
  • Season 27: “BB Hotel Mystère”

(Note: Season 22 was All-Stars 2, so it skipped a more specific theme.)

On paper, these concepts sound like a dream for reality TV chaos. There’s variety. There’s creativity. There’s built-in potential for twists that could genuinely impact gameplay.

But it seems like most of them peak early. A few themed comps, maybe a twist tied to the concept, and then… the game settles into its usual rhythm.

And while that rhythm still works (and don’t get it twisted; we love it), that often leaves the theme feeling more like a marketing hook than a core part of the experience.

Reddit Fan Comments Say It All

If you want a pulse check on how fans feel, Reddit doesn’t hold back… and honestly, the consistency in these reactions says a lot.

One fan summed it up pretty bluntly: “This happens every year haha BB hates to keep up with a theme 🙄” It’s a sentiment that popped up again and again, especially as Season 27 progressed.

And then there’s the timeline issue. One fan noted speaking of the AI themed season, “With last year being an exception, most seasons in the last decade just completely abandon the ‘season twist’ theming by week 4-5.

Still, not everyone sees it as a total loss. One comment offered a slightly cheeky take: “Themes only exist for entertainment if the houseguests are boring.” Which, okay… a little savage, but not entirely off base.

Altogether, the takeaway feels pretty clear: fans don’t hate the themes; they just want them to matter for longer than the first few weeks.

Analyzing the Most Recent Theme: ‘Hotel Mystère’

Season 27 might be one of the best examples of unrealized potential.

When CBS first teased “Big Brother” 27 would take place in a “mysterious, interactive hotel,” fans immediately envisioned secrets, strategy, and high-stakes sleuthing. Think “Clue,” but with showmances, HOH comps, and betrayals in the lounge.

And visually? The show delivered. The set was packed with personality: locked doors, 75 numbered key boxes, a wine cellar, the ominous Venom Lounge, and a Victorian-style conservatory that looked like it belonged in a murder mystery. It had serious “Knives Out” vibes, and it seemed like everything was in place for something deeper.

Then… nothing really happened with it. Yes, we know: there were twists. The Mastermind Twist. A Secret Accomplice. The Mystery Houseguest reveal, with Rachel Reilly stepping back into the chaos. All solid ideas.

But imagine if the Venom Lounge actually impacted nominations. Or if the wine cellar hid a power that shifted alliances. Or if those key boxes unlocked advantages, punishments, or even secret rooms over time.

Instead, it felt like we were watching a stunning set that never fully came to life. So while the aesthetic nailed the assignment, the gameplay side felt like it barely scratched the surface.

What Could Be Done Differently

Here’s the good news; the solution isn’t some massive overhaul. It’s more about commitment than complexity. If “Big Brother” leans all the way into its themes, the payoff could be huge.

Make the house matter long-term. Not just for premiere week and not just for one twist… throughout the entire season. Let rooms unlock new features and let elements change over time. Keep houseguests on edge. Reward curiosity by hiding advantages and introducing risks based on the theme

And most importantly, let the theme influence gameplay decisions. The best twists don’t just look cool; they force players to adapt.

Because at the end of the day, fans aren’t asking for more decoration. They’re asking for more impact.

Season 28 Theme Preview

As for Season 28? The mystery continues.

Julie Chen Moonves has dropped a few teases, but nothing concrete about a theme has been confirmed. It’s all speculation for now, and it seems like fans are already bracing themselves for another big concept reveal.

But here’s the optimistic, positive take: this is a chance to reset.

With so much feedback (and let’s be honest, plenty of passion from the fanbase) the show has a real opportunity to deliver a theme that sticks from start to finish.

Because when “Big Brother” gets it right, it really gets it right. And it seems like everyone watching is ready for that next evolution.
