On This Day in 2012, an Iconic Bravo Show Made Its Debut

On this day in 2012, Bravo premiered “Shahs of Sunset,” a reality series that would go on to redefine representation on cable television.

The show debuted in March 2012 and marked an early collaboration between the network and Ryan Seacrest Productions. At the time, Bravo described the series as a bold new look at a vibrant friend group in Los Angeles.

As per the description, “Shahs of Sunset” will deliver a never-before-seen look inside the captivating lives of six young Persian-American friends in Los Angeles.”

The promise was clear from the start. Viewers were invited inside a world rarely spotlighted on mainstream reality TV.

The show centered on a group of close-knit Persian-American friends as they navigated the tension between high-end glamour and traditional heritage.

Viewers watched as the cast juggled high-stakes business deals and extravagant social lives with the emotional weight of family expectations.

“These passionate socialites are fervent on the dating and party scene, but seeking approval from their families, they face pressures to settle down and marry within the community,” the network had said in a statement, as per Collider.

“From outings on Rodeo Drive to traditional Persian feasts at home, this series celebrates the unique lifestyle of a group of friends who have worked hard for what they have and are not afraid to flaunt it.”

“Shahs of Sunset” first brought viewers into the lives of Reza Farahan, Mercedes “MJ” Javid, Golnesa “GG” Gharachedaghi, Mike Shouhed, Asa Soltan Rahmati, and Sammy Younai, with Lilly Ghalichi soon becoming one of the show’s standout early personalities.

Together, the group helped shape the Bravo series’ identity, mixing glamorous lifestyles with raw, deeply personal moments.

Their friendships, heated conflicts, and open conversations about culture, family, and identity gave the show its emotional heartbeat and helped turn the original cast into some of Bravo’s most recognizable reality stars.

‘Shahs of Sunset’ Went on Hiatus in 2022 After 9 Seasons

In April 2022, TMZ first reported that “Shahs of Sunset” had come to an end, while Variety confirmed the series had been placed on hiatus after nine seasons.

At the time, reports also said Bravo was in discussions with original cast members Reza Farahan, Mercedes “MJ” Javid, and Golnesa “GG” Gharachedaghi about possible future projects.

A source told Variety, however, that it was unlikely the three would reunite for another reality series centered on their lives, since that would essentially amount to reviving “Shahs of Sunset” in another form.

Instead, the source said Bravo had been speaking with each cast member separately and could potentially work with them again in different ways.

Produced by Ryan Seacrest, “Shahs of Sunset” aired its most recent season in August 2021. While Bravo did not formally label the show canceled, its original run ended.

The network has often used the word “hiatus” for series that may one day return, as it did with “The Real Housewives of Miami,” which was eventually revived. For now, though, “Shahs of Sunset” remains off the air.

The Next Chapter of ‘Shahs of Sunset’ Began With ‘The Valley: Persian Style’

Bravo is now revisiting the world that made “Shahs of Sunset” a fan favorite with a new spinoff, “The Valley: Persian Style.” First announced at BravoCon during the “Peaks & the Valley” panel, the series follows a tight group of Persian friends navigating life in the San Fernando Valley after leaving Beverly Hills behind.

The show brings back familiar faces, including Reza Farahan, Mercedes “MJ” Javid, and Golnesa “GG” Gharachedaghi, as they balance marriages, parenting, careers, and evolving friendships. While “Shahs of Sunset” ended its run after nearly a decade on Bravo, the new series aims to carry that energy forward while exploring the cast’s next stage of life.

“The Valley: Persian Style” premiered on Bravo on Jan. 8, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The “Shahs of Sunset” is also available to stream on Peacock with new episodes.
