Legendary actor Billy Crystal is headed back to Broadway in a play that is based on a hard time in his life.
He will be starring in a play called “860,” which is a one-man show that he wrote and will perform, inspired by the 2025 California wildfires, where Crystal tragically lost his home.
The play is set for a “limited 12-week engagement at a Shubert Theater,” the Hollywood Reporter reports, adding that previews will begin in October.
The tragic California wildfires began in January 2025, destroying 13,000 homes.
Billy Crystal Is ‘Thrilled’ to Return to Broadway
The actor detailed his excitement about returning to the big stage, while also mentioning that this is a “challenging new show.”
“I am thrilled to return to Broadway this fall with this challenging new show,” Crystal said (per The Hollywood Reporter). “860 was the address of the home we lost in the Palisades fires. We lived there for 46 years.
“I invite you to come inside 860 and I’ll tell you all the funny and touching things that happened there, not only in my career but to our family. It’s a joyous and heartfelt visit, about how with the love of family and friends and your inner strength, you can get through tough times. I look forward to returning to Broadway and welcoming audiences to 860.”
Billy Crystal Reveals He Began Writing the Morning of the Fires
He also talked about the upcoming show during an appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.”
“The show really takes place in the house that was, and it’s all the funny stories, and touching stories, that have happened to us in that time,” Crystal told the late-night host. “I started really writing it the morning of the fires.”
He documented a lot during this time, with the show set to feature video of the fire, and it will be a tribute to the home he lived in from 1979 to 2025.
“Every inch of our house was filled with love,” Crystal told People in January 2025. “Beautiful memories that can’t be taken away. We are heartbroken of course but with the love of our children and friends we will get through this.”
Along with this tragedy, Crystal has also been mourning the loss of his beloved friends Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, who were killed in December 2025. Their son, Nick Reiner, was arrested and has been charged with their murders.
