Sara Bareilles has had an incredible career: she is a talented musician, has performed in Broadway’s “Waitress” and “Into the Woods,” and starred in Netflix’s hit series, “Girls5eva.” She has done a lot, but in an appearance on “Zach Sang Show” on September 1, the singer reflected on the start of her journey and the heartbreak that inspired her hit song, “Gravity.”
Sara Bareilles Praises Her Teenage Self
“Gravity” was first released in January 2004 for her debut album, “Careful Confessions.” She later re-released it in 2009 for the album, “Little Voice.” Bareilles admitted that it feels like “another lifetime,” since she penned the track. She continued, “My philosophy really about music, and I’ve said this before, is that it’s not mine. It’s just like the thing I was like the portal; I was like the available channel that that music was looking for to come through. I really believe that we’re just vessels.”
Despite her philosophy, Bareilles feels proud of herself for penning such a beautiful, emotional song as a teenager. “I’m so proud of that 18-year-old girl to be open to those big feelings and kind of capturing it that way. I think that’s really special,” she said, before revealing that it was her high school boyfriend who had broken her heart and inspired her song.
The Connection That Sara Bareilles’ Music Has With Fans
The song positively impacted Bareilles’ career and resonated with fans. She revealed what she learned from writing such an emotional track, saying, “I was like there’s like a connective thing that happens when you share something that’s quite intimate, in a way that I don’t think I was entirely aware of.”
The emotion that Bareilles felt poured out of her. “It wasn’t a conscious decision. It was just like I have so much ache, and I don’t know where to put it,” she shared. “Music was always like the receptacle for that. Music was always the place I would go, even just as a listener, to try to make sense of the world.”
She continued, “Then when I started writing, like really writing, like I wrote since I was pretty young, but when I really started writing, I could feel that there was some kind of catharsis in that, but that I felt better when there was a way to sort of hold it somehow.”
Sara Bareilles Is Heartbroken No More
Bareilles is still a powerful songwriter, but she’s not heartbroken anymore! She is married to actor Joe Tippett. The couple met on “Waitress” in 2015 and made their relationship public in 2017. Bareilles has shared a rare look into her coupling through occasional Instagram posts. This includes celebrating their eight-year anniversary. In a post on Instagram on September 21, 2023, she wrote, “8 years. And I want 100 more.”
Bareilles continued, “You are infinite and you fascinate me. From your very particular feelings about wet sponges or how the silverware gets loaded in a dishwasher, to your playful otter spirit, sense of adventure and the uncanny ability to find music and art in absolutely everything… you are my favorite and most unpredictable person.”
