Lisa Ann Walter is stepping into a new chapter, and this time, it’s live on stage. The “Abbott Elementary” star is officially making her Off-Broadway debut in “Heathers The Musical,” marking a major milestone in her decades-long career.
“The Parent Trap” star will begin performances April 27 at New World Stages, where she’s set to take on dual roles as guidance counselor Ms. Fleming and Veronica Sawyer’s mom. According to Deadline, the casting adds a fresh layer to the already popular production, which has continued to build momentum since its 2025 revival.
She shared the news with fans in a playful statement that matched the show’s tone. “This graduation season, it is with extraordinary delight that I announce my spring sabbatical — teaching the deeply disturbed students at Westerberg High,” Walter said. “See you live in person at Heathers The Musical!”
A Cult-Favorite Story With a Dark Twist
“Heathers The Musical,” based on the 1989 cult film, blends dark comedy with sharp commentary on high school life. The story follows Veronica Sawyer, a teen who finds herself pulled into the orbit of the school’s most powerful clique, known as the Heathers.
As Veronica rises in popularity, she begins to question the toxic culture around her. Things take a turn when she meets J.D., a mysterious outsider whose extreme ideas about revenge push the story into darker territory. The musical explores themes like identity, social pressure and the cost of fitting in, all set to a high-energy pop-rock score, according to Broadway Direct.
The current Off-Broadway run has been a major success. Per Deadline, the show opened with the largest advance in the venue’s 21-year history and has broken house records multiple times. It has since extended its run through Sept. 6.
Walter joins a cast that includes Isabella Esler as Veronica, John Cardoza as J.D. and Zan Berube as Heather Chandler.
Fans React as Walter Takes the Stage
Fans were quick to celebrate the casting news after Walter shared it on Instagram. Many praised the move as a perfect fit for her comedic style and stage presence.
“Just when you think it can’t get any better, this is truly next level y’all,” one fan commented. Another added, “I’m so excited! I’m looking forward to seeing her on stage. She’s brilliant and hilarious.” Others kept it simple, calling the moment “ICONIC” and saying, “Never was a casting so perfect.”
The role adds to an already busy time for Walter, who continues to star as Melissa Schemmenti on “Abbott Elementary,” now in its fifth season and already renewed for Season 6. She also has a Hulu stand-up special on the way after more than 20 years in comedy.
Now, with her Off-Broadway debut, Walter is bringing that same energy to a live audience, stepping into a fan-favorite production that continues to resonate with a new generation.
