Sold-Out ‘RENT’ 30th Anniversary One-Night Only Performance Will Be Streaming Online

The 30th anniversary performance of the Broadway musical “RENT” is headed to streaming after tickets to the one-night-only performance sold out in minutes.

The highly anticipated performance generated such intense interest that many theatergoers were unable to secure tickets. Now, a wider audience will be able to see the milestone production when it arrives online.


‘RENT’ 30th Anniversary Celebration Will Feature Original Cast Members

The official 30th anniversary “RENT” concert was officially announced on May 12, 2026. The special one-night-only event is scheduled for October 26 to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Forbes reported that the musical’s original director, Michael Greif, will helm the performance. Additionally, the show’s original music director, Tim Weil, will lead the entire original band. Its members include Kenny Brescia, Stephanie Mack, Jeff Potter, and Daniel A. Weiss.

News of returning original cast members has been tight-lipped since news of the highly anticipated production was announced. According to Playbill, “The evening will feature members of the musical’s legendary original cast joined by special guest performers. That roster is to be announced, with that news due later this summer.”

However, after tickets sold out quickly, it seemed that devoted “RENT” fans would not have the opportunity to see the production. Then, a streaming option was announced.

To raise money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the musical will stream online. Additionally, donors must pay a minimum of $30 to access the event. All proceeds go to the nonprofit that benefits Broadway actors.

“Jonathan wrote Rent in honor of the people he knew who were living and struggling with HIV. And in honor of the many friends and contemporaries he lost to AIDS,” the musical’s original director, Greif, said. “I know he’d be proud and honored to join forces with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his milestone musical.”

Set in New York City’s East Village during the height of the AIDS crisis, “RENT” follows a group of young artists, musicians, and friends as they navigate life and create their own family unit. Additionally, at the story’s center are roommates Mark Cohen and Roger Davis, who struggle to create meaningful art while facing an uncertain future.

The musical celebrates friendship, resilience, and the importance of living fully in the present moment. Therefore, It’s message of love, acceptance, and community has resonated with audiences for nearly three decades, making it one of Broadway’s most enduring classics.

The original Broadway cast featured Anthony Rapp as Mark Cohen, Adam Pascal as Roger Davis, Daphne Rubin-Vega as Mimi Márquez, Jesse L. Martin as Tom Collins, Wilson Jermaine Heredia as Angel Dumott Schunard, Idina Menzel as Maureen Johnson, Fredi Walker-Browne as Joanne Jefferson, and Taye Diggs as Benjamin Coffin III.

“RENT” played its final Broadway performance on September 7, 2008. The musical officially closed at the Nederlander Theatre after completing 12 years and 5,123 performances.
