Why Beloved Eric Dane’s GoFundMe Was Put on Hold

Confusion and concern rippled across social media when the GoFundMe created in Eric Dane’s honor was briefly placed on hold. The campaign, titled “In Honor of Eric Dane,” was organized by “Friends of the Dane Family” with a clear mission. It aims to raise $500,000 to help support Dane’s daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14, as they navigate life after their father’s death.

Amid the uncertainty, here’s the latest update on the GoFundMe campaign and how you can support the family.

Why the Fundraiser Was Placed Under Review?

GoFundMe previously clarified that the pause was part of its routine review process. The platform explained that fundraisers can be temporarily placed under review to confirm they meet its Terms of Service and to verify the listed beneficiary.

As per Rolling Stone, earlier, the company explained the brief pause saying: “Our Trust and Safety team is still looking into this GoFundMe and has reached out to the organiser to gather additional information. All funds are being safely held by our payment processors during this review process. We can follow up as soon as there is an update available.”

The review focused on clarifying details about the organizer and confirming the intended beneficiary. The fundraiser initially did not list a specific individual tied to the campaign.

Current Status of The GoFundMe Campaign: Can You Donate Now?

The GoFundMe campaign has now been verified after being briefly placed under review.

A representative for the platform confirmed to Rolling Stone that the fundraiser is active again. Donations were briefly put on hold while GoFundMe’s Trust and Safety team conducted a standard review. During that period, funds were safely held, and the page was inactive to the public.

In a statement, GoFundMe said: “GoFundMe’s Trust & Safety team was previously working to gather additional information and help ensure the intended beneficiary was added to the fundraiser, as part of our standard review process. Donations were safely held by our payment processors during this review process.”

Now that the review has concluded, the page is once again accepting contributions. The fundraiser initially did not list a specific individual tied to the campaign. It has since been updated, and Dane’s widow, Rebecca Gayheart, is now the beneficiary.

Now that Gayheart has been formally listed, the fundraiser has resumed without restriction. As of writing this story, the fundraiser has now reached 64% of its goal, with $338,658 raised out of $500,000.

More than 3,500 people have donated, showing strong public support for Dane’s daughters as the campaign continues toward its target.

A longtime friend, Mike McGuiness, also addressed the fundraiser on Instagram, explaining the financial strain over the past few years.

He wrote: “Covid and ALS did a number on his work life, and he sadly couldn’t leave his family with the resources he had hoped.

“A GoFundMe is being made, and I will post it on my story for anyone able to help.”

Tributes Continue for the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ & ‘Euphoria’ Star

Dane passed away on February 19 after what loved ones called a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The family confirmed his passing in an official statement to People. He was 53. The actor, best known for his work on “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria,” publicly shared his ALS diagnosis in 2024.

After learning of his condition, friends said he did not retreat. Instead, he leaned in. They described him as a “passionate spokesperson for the ALS community,” using his voice to bring awareness to the disease even as his own health declined.

In the days since his passing, tributes have poured in from across Hollywood. Hailey Bieber has also stepped forward to show their support. Among the notable donors are “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson and his wife, Ashley Levinson, who contributed $27,000.

Levinson shared a heartfelt message with Variety, writing, “I’m heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend Eric. Working with him was an honor. Being his friend was a gift. Eric’s family is in our prayers. May his memory be for a blessing.”

For Dane’s loved ones, the fundraiser reflects more than financial support. It shows how a community can rally together in the face of devastating loss.

The Eric Dane GoFundMe is now fully verified and active. Donations are no longer on hold. Rebecca Gayheart is confirmed as the beneficiary, and the campaign continues working toward its $500,000 goal to support Billie and Georgia.

  2. The rich get richer even in death. Imagine a working person having als and dies with a family who’s supporting there kids. Actors and producers do ate to go fund me for people like themselves. Shame on whoever is accepting the .money

  3. I feel so crazy to me that will the rich die beforehand how they get pulled together for each other, and ensure that their loved ones continue to live the privileged lives if they live. But regular average people die from the same situations every year, and there are no rich people contributing to their GoFundMe accounts!

  4. One never wishes to lack kindness and charity in the loss of someone’s family member. That said, I am confused why the public is being asked to support the children of the late actor. Did he not create a trust, have life insurance etc during years of success? Is the mother of their children incapable of work like everyone else… or is this about trying to sustain a high standard of living to which his ex-wife and children have become accustomed?
Perhaps it is time to join most in this country living with real world problems like choosing between rent, food or medicine.

If the request had been about making a donation in the late actor’s name to ALS, I am sure the public would have responded with generosity. Has Hollywood become so removed from reality that it doesn’t realize how others live…..and the lack of resources to serve the poor in this country?

My kids had jobs in high school, I worked along side my late husband and we saved for our children’s education, retirement, and for a rainy day. My husband died suddenly after just turning 56. He had been unemployed as a senior executive for 4 years during the Great Recession. Living within our means, having saved money, and paying for life insurance helped in addressing mine and my children’s needs. I also went back to work, earning 30k in 2013….not much but helped pay bills and provide health insurance.

People condemn the poor who stand on corners broken, addicted, and homeless asking for help. I have yet to learn of anyone setting up a go fund me page for them. It is time for Hollywood to remember what real work looks like at low wages…something those in the real world cope with daily. Most Americans are generous people…try showing a willingness to get jobs, scale back lifestyles commensurate with your resources…then ask for help if you are struggling…and I am sure many will respond.

    • This is so true! I am disgusted by people with millionaire lifestyles putting up go fund me. Move to a smaller home and get a job like the rest of us do.

  5. Thank you all for your comments. As a Vietnam veteran 69&72, there are 58,479 ( and growing) who died for our country, but no “Go Fund Me” for them. But an actor dies, and people jump on the “Support” the families bandwagon!! . Shows you where some folks real priorities lay !! Very sad !!
