For many daughters, their father is their first hero and their first love. For Eric Dane‘s daughters, Billie and Georgia, that bond was heartbreakingly cut short. Months before his death, Dane recorded one final interview, fully aware that the time he had left was uncertain.
On Thursday, February 19, the “Grey’s Anatomy” star died at 53, just 10 months after publicly sharing his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. People was the first to report Dane’s passing.
The conversation, filmed in private for Netflix’s series “Famous Last Words,” was held back until after he was gone. Now, the video carries a far deeper emotional weight for his wife and daughters.
A Father’s Memories of the Beach and ‘Heaven‘
Months before his death, Eric Dane sat down for what would become his final interview, fully aware that time was no longer promised. The deeply personal conversation was filmed in private for Netflix’s series “Famous Last Words” and held until after he was gone.
When the cameras kept rolling at the end, Dane remained alone in the room. He looked straight ahead and spoke to the two people who defined his world.
“Billie and Georgia, these words are for you,” the star began. “I tried. I stumbled sometimes, but I tried. Overall, we had a blast, didn’t we?”
Dane, who shared daughters Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14, with ex Rebecca Gayheart, returned to the small moments that shaped their life together. He pictured beach days and the sound of his girls splashing into the waves.
“Those days, pun intended, pun intended were heaven,” he said.
The Four Lessons Eric Dane Wanted His Daughters to Remember
Dane then shifted the tone. He told his daughters he wanted to leave them with four lessons his illness had carved into him. He asked them to really hear him.
The first was about presence.
“First, live now, right now in the present. It’s hard, but I learned to do that,” Dane said.
“For years, I would wander off mentally, lost in my head for long chunks of time, wallowing in worry and self-pity, shame and doubt. I replayed decisions, second-guessed myself. ‘I shouldn’t have done this. I never should’ve done that.’ No more.”
GettyHe admitted that ALS forced him to slow down and stay where his feet were. The past came with regret. The future felt fragile. The only place left to truly live was right now.
His second lesson was about passion.
“Second, fall in love. Not necessarily with a person, although I do recommend that as well. But fall in love with something,” Dane said. “Find your passion, your joy. Find the thing that makes you wanna get up in the morning.”
He told them he found acting when he was about their age. That spark carried him through decades. It gave him purpose when he needed it most.
The third lesson centered on friendship.
“Third, choose your friends wisely. Find your people and allow them to find you, and then give yourselves to them,” the dad of two said. “The best of them will give back to you. No judgement. No conditions. No questions asked.”
He spoke with quiet gratitude about the friends who showed up after his diagnosis. When he could no longer drive himself to coffee or head to the gym, they came to him.
“Just show up. And love your friends with everything you have. Hang on to them. They will entertain you, guide you, support you, and some will save you,” he said.
‘Fight Until Your Last Breath’: Eric Dane’s Final Words
His final lesson centered on resilience. “Finally, fight with every ounce of your being and with dignity. When you face challenges, health or otherwise, fight,” Dane said. “Never give up. Fight until your last breath. This disease is slowly taking my body, but it will never take my spirit.”
He reminded his daughters that strength ran in their blood.
“That’s my superpower,” Dane said of being resilient.
“I bounce right up, and I keep coming back. I get up again and again and again. Mark says I’m like a cat. Except a cat has nine lives, and I’m on number 15, easily. So when something unexpected hits you, and it will, because that’s life, fight and face it with honesty, integrity and grace, even if it feels or seems insurmountable.”
His voice cracked as he closed the message.
“I hope I’ve demonstrated that you can face anything. You can face the end of your days. You can face hell with dignity. Fight girls, and hold your heads high,” he continued.
“Billie and Georgia, you are my heart. You are my everything. Good night. I love you. Those are my last words.”
Family Remembers Eric Dane’s Courage & Advocacy
When Dane first revealed his ALS diagnosis to People in 2025. He made it clear he was not facing it alone. He said he was “grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
That gratitude never changed. After his death, his family shared that he passed “following a courageous battle with ALS” and “spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”
They also reflected on how deeply the illness reshaped his purpose.
“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
In the end, Eric Dane left his daughters not just memories, but a doting Dad’s reminder for how to live, love, and fight with grace.
