‘McSteamy’: Eric Dane’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Legacy as Mark Sloan

The news of Dane’s passing broke on Thursday, February 19, that Dane had died following a battle with ALS, a progressive nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord and has no cure.

His passing came nearly two decades after he first stepped onto the set of “Grey’s Anatomy,” which premiered in 2005. The ABC medical drama follows the personal and professional lives of surgeons at Seattle Grace Hospital, later renamed Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Dane made his debut in season 2 in the episode “Yesterday.” His entrance as Dr. Mark Sloan, quickly nicknamed “McSteamy” by fans, instantly complicated the history between Derek Shepherd and Addison Montgomery.

What began as a brief appearance turned into something much bigger. Strong audience reaction led to his promotion as a series regular.

He stayed with the show until 2012, becoming one of its most iconic and widely loved characters.

Now, “Grey’s Anatomy” fans are grieving the loss of the man behind Mark Sloan. The tragedy has also shaken his longtime television family, with cast and crew members beginning to share tributes honoring his impact both on and off screen.

Dane Reflected on His Exit From the Series

After Mark Sloan’s storyline ended, Dane later spoke honestly about the personal battles he was facing behind the scenes.

In a 2024 appearance on the “Armchair Expert” podcast, he reflected on that period with clarity.

“I think I was let go,” Dane said, acknowledging that he was struggling with addiction at the time. He clarified that producers “didn’t” let him go specifically because of that.

“Although it definitely didn’t help. I was starting to become, as most of these actors who have spent significant time on a show, you start to become very expensive for the network,” he explained, recalling the time before he entered treatment in 2011.

“And the network knows that the show is going to do what it’s going to do, irrespective of who they keep on it. As long as they have their Grey, they’re fine.”

He spoke with respect about Rhimes’ leadership during that chapter. As per Deadline, he said: “I wasn’t the same guy they had hired. So I understood when I was let go. And [executive producer] Shonda [Rhimes] was really great. She protected us fiercely. She protected us publicly. She protected us privately. … But I was probably fired. It wasn’t ceremoniously like, ‘You’re fired,’ it was just like, ‘You’re not coming back.’”

Dane also acknowledged how sudden fame affected him.

“If you take the whole eight years on Grey’s Anatomy, I was [expletive] up longer than I was sober. And that’s when things started going sideways for me,” he admitted. “It was overwhelming, and I think I just wanted to pretend that it wasn’t and that I was comfortable with it. Act like you’ve been there, but you haven’t been there.”

As tributes continue to pour in, Rhimes’ words reflect what many longtime viewers feel. Dane helped define some of “Grey’s Anatomy’s” most memorable years.

Even after all these years, Mark Sloan remains an unforgettable part of the show’s legacy and lives on in the hearts of the fans who grew up with him!
