Kate Walsh Defends GoFundMe for Eric Dane’s Daughters With Powerful Words

The entertainment world is still reeling after Eric Dane’s death on February 19, a loss that has left a deep ache among those who knew and loved him. To friends and fans alike, he wasn’t just a familiar face on screen; he was known for his warmth, generosity, and razor-sharp sense of humor.

After revealing his ALS diagnosis last year, Dane chose to speak openly, using his platform to bring attention to the disease and the people living with it.

In the months after his diagnosis, those closest to him watched in awe as he faced his illness with quiet courage and remarkable grace. Colleagues say he never let the weight of it overshadow his work, bringing a steady presence to set and a warmth that made even the longest days feel easier.

As his family mourns an unimaginable loss, an outpouring of love has followed. His former “Grey’s Anatomy” costar, Kate Walsh, is standing up to defendGoFundMe campaign to support his family. Pushing back against backlash for a fundraising campaign, she made it clear that, behind the spotlight, a family is navigating heartbreak and is worthy of compassion.

Her message came after some critics questioned why funds were being raised for the late “Grey’s Anatomy” star. Walsh addressed the backlash directly, challenging the idea that actors are automatically financially secure.

According to a screenshot of Walsh’s Instagram story verified by EntertainmentNow, she wrote:

“A lot of people (I know, in a time when we ask so much of everyone to help with all the things) are under the misconception that actors are rich, but when they go through these debilitating illnesses, they go through all their funds. Thank you for even considering to help ❤️” she wrote.

With her powerful words, Walsh didn’t just stand up for her longtime friend, whom she deeply cared about, but she also pushed back on the belief that actors are automatically rich and protected from financial hardship.

The cost of treatment, specialized care, and time away from work can quickly drain savings.

Even someone who has had success in Hollywood is not immune to that kind of strain.

With her words, Walsh also wants others to see how quickly a health crisis can unravel financial stability. Serious illness does not spare anyone.

Walsh Reflects on Her First Scene With Dane

Walsh also shared personal memories of working with Dane on “Grey’s Anatomy,” recalling their first scene together.

“I believe it was his first scene on the show, too, and he was nervous,” she wrote. “He was so handsome, and I thought, ‘but can this guy act?’”

She quickly realized she had nothing to worry about. “Of course he could, and did, and the rest is history,” she added.

Walsh described Dane as sensitive, intelligent, and deeply supportive during their years on set.

“One of the things I loved about Eric was his sensitivity and vulnerability (and intelligence, of course), but he had the gravitas & old soul that made his work magnetic and made him a great friend off set,” she wrote.

“In those early days of Grey’s, as with most network tv shows, we spent more time with each other than with anyone else, and so we became a family of sorts, and Eric was such a source of support and love.”

Fundraiser Surpasses $300K for Dane’s Daughters

The GoFundMe campaign, launched by friends of the family, aims to provide financial stability for Dane’s daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13.

As of this writing, the fundraiser has raised $303,705 toward its $ 500,000 goal, with more than 3,000 donations.

The page explains that funds will go toward schooling, housing, and essential needs as the girls “face uncertainty” without their father.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the loss of Eric Dane after a hard-fought battle with ALS,” the family’s statement reads. “He leaves behind his devoted wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and two teenage daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

The page also highlights his advocacy work following his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

“Following his diagnosis, Eric became a passionate spokesperson for the ALS community, using his voice and platform to advocate for fellow patients and push for greater awareness,” the page read.

“Any contribution, no matter the size, will help provide stability during this incredibly difficult time and in the future for Eric’s wonderful daughters.”
