HGTV favorites Chip and Joanna Gaines’ love story spans decades. The home renovation couple have been married for more than 20 years and have five children. But their marriage got off to a bumpy start when Chip’s proposal took a tumble.
Joanna Gaines Thought Chip Was Having a Heart Attack
The Waco, Texas-based couple appeared on the Wednesday, January 28, episode of Shark Tank as the show’s first power couple. When a wedding proposal brand, The Yes Girls, pitched their company to the investors, Chip was asked how he proposed to the interior designer.
“He told me that we were going to go backstage to some singer’s—like a little venue. And so, I show up. He gets down on his knees, but he trips on his jacket,” Joanna recalled. “So, I thought he was having a heart attack.”
According to Chip, however, he “didn’t trip.”
“I had like a long trench coat on. So when I went down to get on my knee, I couldn’t get back up,” he admitted. “I locked myself into this awkward position.”
“But I thought he was struggling. I was tending to him,” Jo added.
Clearly the fumble did not have any negative effects on their relationship as they would later tie the knot in May 2003.
While the Gaineses loved The Yes Girls’ brand and story, Joanna ultimately decided not to invest.
“Chip and I love celebrating meaningful moments and bringing that to life,” she said. “You have the eye for details. I think where I get a little nervous for you, is how do we scale you…I love what you’re doing, I just don’t know how we could help you scale this. But I believe in it, and I feel like it’s a beautiful thing you guys are doing.”
Chip and Joanna Gush About Each Other
Chip and Joanna never miss an opportunity to gush about their life together.
“Match made in heaven is not the term you would use to describe us,” Joanna told People in October 2016. “But when we mixed our personalities together, it created a spark.”
She added, “From day one, when we were dating, I realized he is not going to be put in a box. And if there’s a rule, he’s going to break it.”
Chip and Joanna share five children: Drake, 21, Ella, 19, Duke, 17, Emmie Kay, 15, and Crew, 7. Since walking away from “Fixer Upper,” they have continued to run their business, Magnolia, which includes the Silos, retail brands, Magnolia Network and more, from their home in Waco.
