Chip & Joanna Gaines Reflect on Their Love Story After 23 Years of Wedded Bliss
On May 31, 2003, Chip and Joanna Gaines tied the knot in Waco, Texas.
“Match made in heaven is not the term you would use to describe us,” the mother of five told PEOPLE in a 2016 interview. “But when we mixed our personalities together, it created a spark.”
Since then, the Gaineses have gone on to make their dreams come true. They had a successful run on HGTV, built their Magnolia empire from the ground up, started their own farm in Texas, and even welcomed five children.
“Nothing has come easy,” Chip told PEOPLE in 2017. “We’ve worked so hard to have this beautiful family and this farm — it really does seem like the American dream you heard about growing up.”
After all this time, the Gaineses are still madly in love with one another.
“My forever home sweet home ❤️ Happy Anniversary,” Joanna captioned an Instagram post dedicated to their marriage. She added the hashtag “23” to mark how many years they’ve spent as husband and wife.

Chip Gaines Describes Nerve-Wracking Panic While Proposing
Chip and Joanna Gaines couldn’t be happier as a married couple. However, Chip remembers being extremely nervous as he prepared to propose to his future wife.
“He told me that we were going to go backstage to some singer’s—like a little venue. And so, I show up. He gets down on his knees, but he trips on his jacket,” Joanna remembered on an episode of “Shark Tank.” “So, I thought he was having a heart attack.”
“I had like a long trench coat on. So when I went down to get on my knee, I couldn’t get back up,” Chip added. “I locked myself into this awkward position.”
“But I thought he was struggling. I was tending to him,” Joanna continued the story.
The Newlyweds Couldn’t Wait to Embark On Their Honeymoon
Although the proposal was somewhat awkward, the couple successfully tied the knot during their May 2003 wedding.
“My favorite moment is when we said goodbye to everybody, got in the limo and ate so much food!” Joanna remembered the special day while speaking to PEOPLE in 2022. “I just remember, when we got there, I saw how good the food looked and I asked my mom, ‘No matter what, will you just put some food in a container and put it in the car?'”
Afterward, the entrepreneur remembered feeling excited to eat all the delicious food with her new husband.
“So we did our thing, we did our dance, we did all the things that you’re supposed to do at a wedding,” Joanna continued. “And all I kept saying is, ‘I can’t wait to be in that car with Chip headed to our honeymoon.’ And the second that door shut, I was like, ‘Thank God, this is why I’m here. I just wanna be with you and I wanna eat.'”
Fans wish the Gaines family many more wonderful years together.
