Joanna Gaines shared a look at the trendy hairstyle she rocked back in the day — and it’s a lot different from the look she sports now. The former HGTV star’s throwback photo highlighted how high her bangs were at the time, and her fans could totally relate.
Joanna Gaines Rocked Big Bangs in the ’80s
On September 20, Gaines took to Instagram to share a photo of her as a teenager, highlighting one of the unfortunate hair trends of that time.
“Last week on my cooking show we baked and then talked about my bangs from the 80s. Who else styled their bangs like this? I must have been proud of that profile … look at that height!” she wrote in the caption.
In the photo, Gaines stands in front of a bathroom mirror and it’s clear from her side profile that her bangs are reaching epic heights. The pic also captures her shadow, which adds another fun perspective of the big bangs.
Fans lit up the comments section, with many sharing their own experiences with the hairstyle. “Not sure what I love more … the side profile, the shadow, or the reflection,” one fan wrote. “Either way, it’s all hair-raising.”
Others recalled the hairspray that made it all possible, with comments including, “Let’s not forget the hairspray cans we went through,” “Yeah, girl! Aquanet for the win! 😂😂😂,” and “It was the 80s. Aquanet was our friend.”
Another fan shared, “Mall bangs!! Retired hair stylist here. In Tennessee I did A LOT of mall bangs (what we called them)! These are perfection!!”
Others shared how painstaking the process was to achieve these heights. “I remember being in 1st grade, 1990, waking up as early as I could to heat up the curling iron and curl top half of my bangs up and bottom half of my bangs down, then a quick brush to make it feathery,” one fan noted. “I went to bed early just to make sure I could accomplish this every morning.”
“And if mine were not PERFECT, I could not leave for the school bus,” another fan wrote.

Gaines usually sports a sleeker hairstyle, either worn down with cascading waves or pulled back in a ponytail or up in a bun.
In a September 2023 Instagram post, the “Magnolia Table” star showed off a very different look.
“Still channeling my inner alternative, angsty teen from the @pearljam concert last night,” she wrote in the caption. “Gonna just embrace this look for a while 🤘🏼✌🏼.”
In the first image, her hair looked full and tousled, and it’s no wonder — she included a video of her shaking her head to the music!
Gaines also shared an Instagram post of her and husband Chip enjoying the concert.
“@chipgaines you are still the very best at surprises … loved getting to watch one of my all-time favorite bands. @pearljam was everything 17-year-old Jo could have imagined,” she wrote in the caption.
Gaines added, “What a fun night.”
