The new HGTV series “Property Brothers: Under Pressure,” starring Drew and Jonathan Scott, shows a different side of the brothers. Jonathan explains how his own personal tragedy influenced his approach to helping homeowners.
Jonathan Scott Shares How He Felt Connected to Homeowners on New Show
In a March 20 interview with People, Drew and Jonathan spoke about how “Property Brothers: Under Pressure” is different than shows they have done in the past.
In “Under Pressure,” the brothers help home buyers with their purchase decisions and then make renovations to the houses.
Jonathan explained that there’s more “variety” of experiences on this series. “Whether it’s the first couple that lost their home in the L.A. Fires, or generational families that are moving in together so they can afford to get a house — everybody’s got a different story,” he explained.
According to the HGTV star, they “intentionally cast lower budgets and more relatable stories” on this show.
The brothers noted that they’re typically “emotionally detached” from the homeowners’ situations so they can focus on providing guidance, but Jonathan related to the buyers in the premiere episode.
The couple lost their rental home and belongings in the L.A. wildfires in 2025. Jonathan is currently rebuilding fiancee Zooey Deschanel’s family home, which burned down in the fires.
He explained that experiencing that loss helped him to relate to the home buyers. “We really tried to be not only there to help renovate [their new] home, but also be some support for them,” Jonathan said.
The HGTV star added, “At one point, I took them to the project I’m rebuilding — Zooey’s family home that burned — and I think knowing that we’re going through the same thing at the same time was good for them.”
‘Property Brothers: Under Pressure’ Is Emotional
The brothers also discussed how their new show reveals more of the emotions in the home buying and renovation process.
“You’ll see there’s also this real docu-style, kind of behind-the-scenes … We don’t turn the camera off, so you get to see a lot of the stuff that normally would happen after we stopped rolling,” Jonathan explained.
Drew noted that “any situation you think of in today’s housing market” and the associated “stresses” are shown on screen.
“Every scenario you can think of. And the emotions are there,” he added. “The frustrations — even Jonathan and me arguing. So you get a lot of everything.”
Fans lit up the comments section of the Property Brothers’ Instagram post about the show’s premiere, with one person noting, “I loved them. They were a really cool couple. So glad they were able to find what they needed and wanted.”
