Billy Joel is continuing his recovery nearly a year after revealing a serious health diagnosis — and his daughter says the music icon is making strong progress.
In a new interview, Alexa Ray Joel shared an encouraging update on her father’s condition after the legendary performer was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a brain disorder that can affect balance and cognitive function.
Alexa Is ‘So Proud’ of Her Dad
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Alexa said the 76-year-old musician has been committed to his recovery and remains determined to regain his strength.
“He’s doing physical therapy regularly and he’s doing great. He’s lost weight as he’s on his diet,” she said. “I’m so proud of him. He’s such a trooper, so resilient and committed to being healthy and proactive. He’s a fighter. He’s always been a fighter and talks in his documentary about how life’s like a fight.”
Joel first revealed his diagnosis in May 2025 when he announced he would be canceling all of his scheduled concerts in order to focus on treatment and recovery.
At the time, the decision disappointed many fans who had hoped to see the iconic performer continue touring.
In a statement shared with supporters, Joel acknowledged the difficult choice.
“I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience,” he said at the time. “Thank you for understanding.”
Shortly after the announcement, Alexa expressed her support publicly on Instagram, thanking fans for their concern and encouragement.
“We love you and we got you, Pop!” she wrote. “I just wanted to thank you all for the beautiful outpouring of love and support amid the recent news of my father’s health diagnosis.”
She continued by praising her father’s determination throughout the recovery process.
“My Dad is the strongest and most resilient man I’ve ever known… and he’s entirely committed to making a full recovery with ongoing physical-therapy treatments as he continues to regain his strength.”
Joel Performed in January
Despite stepping back from touring, Joel hasn’t completely stayed away from the stage. In January 2026, the singer made a surprise appearance during a celebration marking the 30th birthday of Wellington, Florida — a town near where he owns property.
During the unexpected performance, Joel delighted the crowd with renditions of two of his classic hits, “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and “Big Shot.”
“I wasn’t planning on working tonight,” he joked to the audience before sitting down at the piano.
The appearance was a welcome sign for fans who have been following updates about his health.
Joel has also spoken openly about how the diagnosis has affected his life. While the phrase “brain disorder” may sound alarming, the singer has said he remains optimistic about managing his symptoms and focusing on treatment.
