Lately, a few stars have decided that now is the time to switch things up with their looks, which has resulted in striking new hair colors. For instance, Millie Bobby Brown went dark red and Ariana Grande ditched her blonde ‘do while Anne Hathaway debuted a platinum shade. Now, Jessica Simpson has revealed that she dyed her hair brown. And not just any brown, but what her longtime colorist Rita Hazan is calling “hot chocolate brunette.”
“It took a few hours to color because we kept making it darker and darker,” Hazan told People. “I didn’t want to go too dark at once, so we gradually increased the hue to ensure that we got the most perfect tone.”
“For years we kept different variations of either blonde or very blonde,” Hazan added. “Just recently I took her dirty blonde, and the shade continues to get deeper and more brunette.”
If you want to get a glimpse at Simpson’s “hot chocolate brunette” hair, just take a look at the video she posted to Instagram. Showing her in a furry tiger print coat and ripped black jeans, she also wears some pretty formidable boots. That’s not to mention her long brown hair which she wears down as she sings.
Jessica’s New Look Matches Her ‘Moody’ Era of Music
When Hazan addressed the reason behind Simpson’s new hair color, the stylist explained that it’s meant to match the vibe of her new music.
“I think her music is very moody,” Hazan noted. “It’s a full vibe, so the hair has to match — very deep and multi layered and dimensional with the color.”
While the new color is a lovely shade of brunette, would the singer be willing to go any darker in the future?
“This shade is pretty dark for her but maybe we could go a little darker,” Hazan said. “Her hair color still has to be sexy and soft. Darker colors can be dense and aging for anyone.”
Granted, for Simpson, the new color is “a great change.”
Others May Embrace Darker Hair This Year
CanvaWhile Simpson took the plunge and opted to dye her hair a delicious shade of “hot chocolate brown,” she might not be alone. Hazan explained, “I do think we will see a lot of blondes going darker in 2026.”
She also pointed out that “[c]hange is good.”
Saying there will likely be a fair share of “rich warm tones” of hair in 2026, she added, “Not necessarily red, but more chocolate chestnut browns, golden buttery blondes and rich auburn.”
