’80s Rocker Cancels Show After ‘Sleep Deprivation’ From Noisy Hotel: ‘It Will Take Me 1 Year to Recover’

Rock legend Morrissey has called off a scheduled concert in Valencia, Spain, after a sleepless night left him unable to perform. The 66-year-old singer, widely known as the former frontman of The Smiths, was set to take the stage on Thursday at the Palau de les Arts.

However, messages posted on his official website stated that the performance could not proceed after he failed to get any rest overnight.

Festival Noise Reportedly Left the Singer Exhausted

Morrissey had just arrived in Valencia after two days of travel by road, according to an update posted on his official website.

“Having travelled for two days by road, Morrissey reached the hotel in Valencia late on Wednesday,” the message read.

“Any form of sleep or rest throughout the night was impossible due to festival noise / loud techno singing/megaphone announcements. This experience has left Morrissey in a catatonic state. Before leaving for tonight’s scheduled concert, please check that the show remains possible under these circumstances.”

A follow-up post later confirmed that the concert would not go ahead as planned.

“Tonight’s scheduled show in Valencia has been rendered impossible due to sleep deprivation,” the update said.

“Morrissey drove from Milan to Valencia but has been unable to rest in Valencia due to noise.”

The message also attempted to clarify the situation, stressing that the performance had not technically been canceled but could not take place under the circumstances.

“The show is not cancelled. Circumstances render the show impossible.”

According to a Rolling Stone report, a representative later confirmed that the Valencia concert had ultimately been canceled.

Morrissey Describes Hotel Stay as ‘Indescribable Hell’

Morrissey also shared his reaction to the difficult night at his hotel.

“Morrissey has described his hotel on Plaza Manises as … ‘indescribable hell. It will take me one year to recover. And that is an understatement.’”

Reports indicate the noise may have been linked to celebrations surrounding Valencia’s Las Fallas festival. The annual event began on March 1 and is known for its lively street gatherings, music, and fireworks across the city.

The festival is scheduled to conclude on March 19 with the traditional burning of large papier-mache sculptures.

Morrissey Has Canceled Several Shows in Recent Years

Morrissey’s latest cancellation in Valencia follows a string of recent tour disruptions. Over the years, the singer has occasionally postponed or canceled performances for various reasons. Reports suggest that more than 100 shows have been called off since 2012.

Earlier this year, the singer called off his first scheduled concert of 2026 in Rancho Mirage, California, citing “an adverse reaction to a prescription medication.”

In November 2025, the “I Know It’s Over” singer also scrapped several tour stops, including five performances across South America.

According to New Noise Magazine, those cancellations were attributed to “extreme exhaustion.” The shows had been part of the tour supporting his latest album, “Make-Up Is a Lie,” which was released on March 6.

Just months earlier, in September 2025, Morrissey canceled two performances in Connecticut and Boston after what was described as a security threat.

“In recent days, there has been a credible threat on Morrissey’s life,” a statement shared on his Facebook page said at the time.

In another instance last June, Morrissey called off a planned show in Stockholm, Sweden, while expressing frustration about the challenges of touring without industry backing.

“The pain of not reaching Stockholm this week is horrific for the band and crew. I know it’s impossible for people to understand, but we dream of Stockholm, Reykjavik, Trondheim, Helsinki, Aarhus … but there is no financial support from imaginary record labels to get us to such places,” he wrote in a message posted on Morrissey Central.

Morrissey is currently touring in support of his latest album, “Make-Up Is a Lie.”

The project marks his 14th solo record since The Smiths split in 1987, continuing a career that has spanned decades.

Despite the cancellation in Valencia, Morrissey is expected to move forward with the remainder of his tour schedule.
