Critically Acclaimed Show Canceled by Netflix

Netflix has gained a reputation for cancelling fan-favorite television series despite high viewership and critical reviews. Now, the streaming giant has struck again, canceling “Boots,” a drama series about a closeted teen who joins the U.S. Marine Corps, after a single season.

Variety confirmed that Netflix had cancelled “Boots” on December 15. Andy Parker created the series, and legendary producer Norman Lear was also responsible for bringing it to air. Notably, “Boots” is based on a book by Greg Cope White entitled “The Pink Marine.”

The now canceled Netflix series stars Miles Heizer as the main character, Cameron Cope. Liam Oh also stars as his best friend, Ray McAffey.

Heizer previously opened up to Variety about his hopes for the show to continue. He said, “There are a lot of stories to tell, from more of Greg’s different experiences in the Marines to Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, to when it was repealed.”

The actor continued, “I would do it for 10 seasons if they let us.”

Netflix’s ‘Boots’ Boasted Strong Reviews From Critics & Fans

“Boots” premiered on Netflix in October 2025. According to The Wrap, the drama series rose to number two on Netflix charts of the most-watched series in its second week. Per the report, it was watched by over 9.4 million people that week. The show also made a mark with fans on social media.

The show has stellar reviews from official critics and fans. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently sits at a 90 percent rating from critics. The audience gave “Boots” the same score. Naturally, this makes it “certified fresh” on the platform.

“Boots” also fared well on Metacritic. The show has an overall 73 percent rating from 23 reviews, which gives it the “generally favorable” distinction. The user score for the Netflix series is 6.4.

The Pittsburgh Tribune’s review said, “‘Boots’ proves to be a smart, empathetic, character-driven drama that explores coming of age in a time when Cameron can’t be his true self, while also showing the toll that repression takes on another character, conflicted and similarly closeted Sgt. Sullivan (Max Parker).”

USA Today said of the show, “The show is quiet but powerful, and may just be one of the best new series Netflix has produced in years.”

Fans Are Reacting to the News

Many fans of “Boots” assumed the series would get a second season from Netflix. However, following the news of its cancellation, some of them are taking to social media with their reactions.

One person said, “Boots had great ratings and reviews. So, of course, Netflix canceled it.” Someone else wrote, “Boots cancelled after one season.. I can’t even say I didn’t see this coming.”

Finally, another fan wrote, “Boots cancelled so we’ll never know what happens to Sullivan.”
