A much-loved sitcom will be quietly removed from popular streaming service Netflix this summer.
Canadian series “Kim’s Convenience” began airing on CBC Television in 2016. It lasted for five seasons and 65 episodes.
Based on Ins Choi’s 2011 play of the same name, the series focuses on “The misadventures of a Korean-Canadian family running a convenience store” (per IMDb).
After initially being renewed for a sixth season, the show’s producers took to Instagram in March 2021 to confirm it had been cancelled before production on said season began. Per the statement they posted, “At the end of production on Season 5, our two co-creators confirmed they were moving on to other projects. Given their departure from the series, we have come to the difficult conclusion that we cannot deliver another season of the same heart and quality that made the show so special.”
At the time, fans expressed their disappointment and love for the show in the comments section. One fan wrote, “I just finished 5 seasons in 3 days, please bring this back this show is amazing 😢😢❤️.”
Now, according to What’s on Netflix, “Kim’s Convenience, the fan-favorite Canadian sitcom, is officially slated to depart Netflix in all regions globally on June 2nd, 2026, following its Canadian removal a few years ago.”
Kim’s Convenience Has a Great Cast
The magic of “Kim’s Convenience” comes from its brilliant cast. Said cast includes Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Jean Yoon, Andrea Bang, Simu Liu, Andrew Phung, and Nicole Power.
Lee and Yoon play Mr. Sang-il Kim (“Appa”) and Mrs. Yong-mi Kim (“Umma”), respectively. Appa and Umma are the owners and operators of the eponymous convenience in the Moss Park neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario.
Bang plays Janet Kim, the couple’s daughter. Liu plays Jung Kim, their estranged son. Phung plays Arnold “Kimchee” Han, Jung’s best friend since childhood. Power plays Shannon Ross, Jung’s manager at a local car rental place.
Undoubtedly, the biggest star to emerge from the show is Simu Liu. Liu, 37, has now made it to Hollywood. He is, of course, best known for playing the titular Shang-Chi in the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe movie “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” It’s a role he’ll reprise later this year in “Avengers: Doomsday.”
It’s Been on Netflix Since 2018
“Kim’s Convenience” debuted internationally on Netflix in July 2018, meaning its removal from the platform will bring to an end almost eight years of it being on there.
The show’s official Instagram account announced the news in a June 2018 video featuring Simu Liu, in which he celebrated the announcement by saying “hello” in several different languages.
Its removal from the streaming service’s packed database will undoubtedly disappoint sitcom fans from around the world.
If you’re not familiar with “Kim’s Convenience,” we thoroughly recommend giving it a watch before it disappears from Netflix in just over a month’s time. While it doesn’t have a critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score on the review aggregator website is an impressive 86%. That just goes to show what a gem of a series it is.
We’ll be incredibly sad to see “Kim’s Convenience” go.
