“The Night Agent” premiered on Netflix in March 2023 and quickly became one of the streamer’s biggest shows. Now, unfortunately for fans of the action-thriller, it has been announced that its upcoming fourth season will be its last.
Per Variety, the show’s creator, Shawn Ryan, released a statement following the news that Netflix would end “The Night Agent” after season four. He said, “Ever since the initial success of ‘The Night Agent,’ I’ve been obsessed with eventually delivering a proper and thrilling conclusion to the show and to Peter Sutherland’s journey.”
Ryan went on, “I’m so grateful to Netflix and Sony Pictures Television for partnering with me on The Night Agent and for giving us the space to deliver a definitive final season to our worldwide legion of fans. We are hard at work to complete our story and to make our final season one our fans will never forget.”
“The Night Agent” stars Gabriel Basso, Titus Welliver, Trevante Rhodes, and Li Jun Li. Elizabeth Lail will join the show for season 4.
Netflix’s ‘The Night Agent’ Is Acclaimed
As mentioned, “The Night Agent” premiered in March 2023 with 10 episodes. In addition to being popular, the show has an overall 82% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences gave the show an overall 68%.
Regarding the individual seasons, the third is, so far, the most acclaimed, with critics giving it 86% and audiences 82%. The second installment of the series seems to be the most divisive, with audiences giving it a 40% rating. However, critics felt it deserved an 86%.
Unfortunately, the viewership for “The Night Agent” wasn’t impressive for its third season. According to Forbes, the season debuted in February 2026 with only 8.4 million views. While this may seem high, the show has been in a rating decline since its first season. It marked a 39.6% decline from the season 2 drop in episodes.
For context, season one of the Netflix thriller drew in 20.6 million viewers, whereas the second premiered with 13.9 million. Of course, this does not account for fans who watch the show later.
No official reason was given for “The Night Agent” being canceled, but it seems likely that viewership could be a factor.
Gabriel Basso Opens Up About Season 3
GettySeason three of “The Night Agent” premiered on February 16 with a mostly new cast, in addition to Basso. He spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the show and why the changes don’t cause concern for him.
He said, “I think where this business has sort of failed is they’re trying to placate an audience that doesn’t exist yet. I try not to think about, ‘What if people don’t like this?’”
Additionally, he opened up about performing his stunts for the show. According to him, “You don’t get to eat the best food, sleep in the most comfortable beds, and make a million dollars and then when it comes time to get hit by a guy, say, ‘No, that could hurt.'”
He added, “You’re paid a lot of money — there should be a feeling of being beholden to the audience. I’m obligated to risk my life for something sick that could live forever on camera. It’s like the quote from Spider-Man: ‘With great power comes great responsibility.'”
