Another season of “House of the Dragon” has come to an end, and whether you loved or hated the way it wrapped, there is still one more season. “House of the Dragon” Season 4 is confirmed to be the final season, but everyone has to wait until 2028 to check it out.
That’s a long wait! Sure, it’s the wait fans of the “Game of Thrones” prequel are used to, but it doesn’t mean it’s an easy one. The good news is that there are plenty of other shows to check out during this two-year drought. While “Game of Thrones” and “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” are obvious choices, it’s time to look at other types of shows that offer something similar to this dragon-fueled civil war series.
‘My Lady Jane’
One of the worst things to happen in 2024 was the abrupt cancellation of Prime Video’s “My Lady Jane.” It really should have been renewed for a second season, but even without the continuation, this is a magic- and fun-filled series to check out while you wait for “House of the Dragon.” It’s based on the novel of the same name, but there are some substantial changes to the storyline.
You think you know all about Lady Jane Grey, the Nine Day Queen, who was executed on the orders of her cousin, Mary I of England. However, this story is going to take you on a journey that you least expect. What if there was something magical about the Tudor monarch’s cousin? What if there was something different about her husband, Guildford Dudley? And what if the fight between Catholics and Protestants wasn’t what you once believed?
‘Shōgun’
If you want something that delves more into the realities of history, then Hulu is the place to turn. “Shōgun” is based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel, and it tells the story of two ambitious men from very different worlds. John Blackthorne is an English sailer who is shipwrecked in Japan, and he soon finds out just how different the culture is.
It’s a difficult time in Japan. Yoshii Toanaga is a powerful daimyo, but with dangerous political rivals, his rule is at risk. It’s not just about the two men, though, as John gets to know Lady Toda Mariko, a woman who has invaluable skills, but her family ties lead to her having to prove her loyalty. It’s loosely based on true events, and there is a second season confirmed, despite this originally being a limited series. With the political alliances, this is perfect for any fans of the “Game of Thrones” universe.
‘Peaky Blinders’
If you have not checked out “Peaky Blinders” yet, then you need to right away. This is perfect for fans of the family dynamics and change within the world of “House of the Dragon.” However, this series packs a punch that no other has managed to do, as we start to fall for those who would usually be viewed as the villains. After all, how can we like the head of a mob family?
“Peaky Blinders” starts at the end of World War I, a war that was supposed to be the end of all wars. Yet, it led to men going back to a world that had forgotten about the sacrifices they made in a country facing financial problems. There is love, loyalty, and drama, as we go through the years with the Shelby family focusing on taking back what they believe is theirs. All six seasons and the movie are on Netflix.
‘The Last Kingdom’
What about fans of the Viking era? “The Last Kingdom” brings war and political changes, while also focusing on one man who finds himself straddling two different people. Uhtred was born a Saxon but raised a Dane, and it’s something that plays on his mind throughout the five seasons and the movie that helps to bring an end to the tale.
After losing his ancestral home, Uhtred starts off as a slave and then an adopted son of Ragnar. After Ragnar’s death, Uhtred heads on a journey to get his ancestral home back, but it’s not as easy as he thinks it will be. Thrown in King Alfred, who wants to unite the whole of Britain, various Danish warriors, and his own uncle, Uhtred will need to find a way to survive and find men loyal to him to fight. It’s a beautiful journey of survival, but it certainly brings loss and heartache along the way. Watch all five seasons and the movie of “The Last Kingdom” on Netflix.
‘Succession‘
Finally, it’s a story of family divide, which is perfect for fans of “House of the Dragon.” Plus, it’s on HBO Max, which you already have! “Succession” brings divide to a family despite the head of said family still being alive. It’s also more black comedy than drama, which helps to lighten the load a little.
The Roy family owns a global media conglomerate in New York City, and as the siblings find out that their father is in ill health, they realize that it’s time to see whose shoulders the company will land on. Of course, they all want to run it, and they all want to prove they have what it takes, but who will the stakeholders back, and what happens when their father doesn’t quite kick the bucket when they think he will?
