She proved she belonged. Now comes the hard part.
Running Point Season 2 arrives on Netflix on April 23, and this time, Isla Gordon is not the surprise pick — she is the one everyone is watching. Kate Hudson returns as the president of the fictional Los Angeles Waves basketball franchise in the Mindy Kaling comedy that became one of Netflix’s biggest breakout hits of 2025.
Season 1 debuted on February 27, 2025, and within a single week ranked first on Netflix in the United States, landing in the Top 10 in 83 countries with 9.3 million views in its opening days. Netflix renewed it in March 2025 — before most viewers had even finished their first binge.
Season 2 is ten days away. The Gordon family is back. And this time, the stakes are personal.
What Happens After Game 7
Season 1 ended with Isla leading the Waves to their best season in years — only to fall heartbreakingly short in Game 7 of the playoffs. Now in Season 2, according to Netflix Tudum, Isla is no longer seen as a placeholder. She is firmly in charge, with full scrutiny from the board, her family, and the public. The pressure is higher than ever.
The season’s central tension arrives quickly. Her oldest brother, Cam, played by Justin Theroux — newly elevated to a series regular — has returned from rehab and appears to be quietly positioning himself to reclaim the presidency he surrendered. What unfolds is a Gordon family civil war with the franchise as the prize. On the court, the Waves are championship contenders. Off it, Isla is caught between two men — her fiancé Lev (Max Greenfield) and head coach Jay (Jay Ellis) — while managing a locker room and boardroom that refuse to stay quiet.
The full returning cast includes Kate Hudson, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Brenda Song, Fabrizio Guido, Chet Hanks, Toby Sandeman, and Uche Agada. New faces joining the season include Ken Marino as Al Fleischman, described as the “toilet king of Orange County,” angling for better courtside seats, Tommy Dewey as Magnus, the general manager of a rival team, and Ray Romano, who stepped in to replace Robert Townsend in a recasting confirmed in October 2025. Blake Anderson, Richa Moorjani, Jake Picking, and Aliyah Turner round out the new additions.
The Real Story Behind Running Point Season 2 Netflix
One of the most compelling layers of the show is what sits beneath it. Running Point draws its inspiration from Jeanie Buss, the real-life owner and president of the Los Angeles Lakers, who serves as an executive producer alongside Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, David Stassen, Kate Hudson, and Howard Klein. The show fictionalizes her journey into a story about a woman navigating a male-dominated institution on her own terms — a premise that resonated immediately with audiences in Season 1.
Macaulay Culkin, husband of series star Brenda Song, also appears in a cameo this season. He visited the set during production and was written in as a heckler character.
GettyAll episodes of Running Point Season 2 will drop simultaneously on Netflix on April 23 at 12 a.m. PT. Kaling told Netflix Tudum at the time of renewal that the audience response to Season 1 left the entire creative team overwhelmed. “We still cannot believe the response from audiences,” she said. “Thank you to everyone who has watched.”
The championship has not been won yet. But Isla Gordon is not done proving herself either.
