Hit Netflix Dating Show Canceled After Two Seasons

Netflix officially canceled “The Ultimatum: Queer Love” after two seasons, according to Variety. “The Ultimatum: Queer Love” was a spin-off of Netflix’s original dating show, “The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On.” Both shows featured couples at a crossroads in their relationships, with one partner wanting to get married and the other being unsure.

In both versions of the show, couples date their fellow cast members before deciding who to move forward in the experiment with. Those couples then move in together, simulating a marriage. At the end of the experiment, everyone decides whether to get engaged to their original partner, their new partner, or leave the experiment single.

The Ultimatum’s’ History on Netflix

“The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On” first aired on Netflix in April 2022. Three seasons have aired thus far, with a fourth season on the way. “The Ultimatum: Queer Love” premiered one year after its predecessor, in May 2023. The series quickly made it to Netflix’s top 10 list.

“The Ultimatum: Queer Love” season 2 didn’t have quite the same success, failing to make Netflix’s global top 10. The season aired over two years after season 1, in June 2025.

The original series in the franchise is hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey, also known for their role as hosts of another Netflix hit, “Love Is Blind.” However, “The Ultimatum: Queer Love” was hosted by JoAnna Garcia Swisher, an actress known to Netflix viewers for her role on “Sweet Magnolias.”

‘The Ultimatum: Queer Love’ Had a Long Hiatus

“The Ultimatum: Queer Love” waited two years to air season 2, but filming occurred long before the season came out. According to Variety, the Netflix show’s second season wrapped filming around July 2022. This timeline means both seasons 1 and 2 were filmed before the show ever aired.

Although there was a long break between “The Ultimatum: Queer Love’s” two seasons, “The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On” aired in between, giving fans plenty of episodes to satiate their appetites for the dramatic dating series.

‘The Ultimatum: Queer Love’ Provided Representation

With “The Ultimatum: Queer Love’s” cancelation, there’s one fewer reality dating show featuring an LGBTQ+ cast. The Netflix reality dating show wasn’t the first to include such representation, though. MTV’s “Are You The One” featured a sexually fluid cast for its eighth season, and HBO Max’s “12 Dates of Christmas” included a gay bachelor as one of the three main daters.

Now that “The Ultimatum: Queer Love” is coming to a close, there will be one fewer dating show geared towards the LGBTQ+ community.
