Netflix has cast Australian actor Toby Wallace as a series regular in its upcoming live-action adaptation of the “Assassin’s Creed” video game franchise. The streamer confirmed the news in an announcement published Nov. 25 on its Tudum site.
Wallace, known for roles in “Babyteeth,” “The Bikeriders,” and the upcoming third season of “Euphoria,” is the first actor to officially join the series. Netflix has not released details about the character, keeping plot information tightly held as production continues to take shape.
The project marks one of Netflix’s most high-profile video game adaptations to date and represents a long-anticipated step forward for the franchise’s television future.
A Franchise With a Massive Legacy
Netflix first revealed plans to partner with Ubisoft on multiple “Assassin’s Creed” projects in 2020. Development on the live-action show stalled for several years and included a change in creative leadership, according to reports from Deadline.
The series is led by showrunners Roberto Patino, whose credits include “Westworld” and “DMZ,” and David Wiener, known for his work on “Halo” and “The Killing.” Netflix said the adaptation will follow the franchise’s core conflict between two ancient factions, one seeking to control humanity’s fate and the other fighting to protect free will.
Ubisoft’s game series launched in 2007 and has since sold more than 200 million units worldwide, placing it among the best-selling video game franchises in history. Each installment takes players to a different historical era, and the show is expected to borrow elements from that time-spanning structure.
Trade outlets reported that filming could begin in 2026 and may include locations in Italy, echoing settings made famous by earlier games.
Why Wallace’s Casting Matters
Wallace’s addition signals that the long-gestating project is finally gaining momentum. His rise in both independent film and prestige television positions him to bring dramatic weight to a series that aims to blend character-driven storytelling with large-scale action.
IMDb reported that the show intends to explore deeper thematic territory, including identity, control, and the consequences of historical power struggles. Those ambitions align with comments from the creative team, who described the series as a grounded thriller set inside a centuries-long conflict.
Fans remain curious about which historical period the first season will tackle and whether the show will introduce an entirely new protagonist or reimagine a familiar figure from the games. Netflix has not yet confirmed those details.
The last major screen version of the franchise was the 2016 feature film starring Michael Fassbender, which received mixed reviews. For many longtime fans, the new series represents a fresh opportunity to bring the franchise to mainstream audiences with greater creative depth.
With Wallace now set to enter the world of hidden blades, secret societies, and ancestral memories, Netflix has taken its first major step toward reviving one of gaming’s most iconic universes. The leap of faith has finally begun.
