Twelve actors received their first nod for an Academy Award when the 2026 Oscar nominations were announced on January 22. See below for a full list of the first-time nominees.
Rose Byrne
Australian actress Rose Byrne received her first Oscar nomination for her lead role as Linda in “If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You.” The stressful dramedy allows Byrne to flex her acting chops as her character is put in increasingly more precarious situations. She recently won the Golden Globe for “Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy” for the role. Byrne has starred in several television shows such as “Physical” and “Platonic” as well as the massive horror franchise, “Insidious.”

Jacob Elordi–another Australian actor–is up for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his turn as the Creature in Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein.” Elordi previously starred in films like “Saltburn,” “Priscilla” and “The Kissing Booth.” The actor is perhaps best known for his role as Nate Jacobs on “Euphoria.” He will reprise the role for the show’s upcoming third season. Elordi won this year’s Critics’ Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor for playing the Creature.

Elle Fanning
Elle Fanning, who has been acting since the age of three, was rewarded for her role in “Sentimental Value” with a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. In the Norwegian film, Fanning plays an American actress who Stellan Skarsgård’s character, a director, chooses to replace his daughter as the star of his upcoming movie. Fanning also starred in “Predator: Badlands” in 2025. She’s next set to play Effie Trinket in “Sunrise on the Reaping,” a prequel to “The Hunger Games.”

In “Sinners,” Michael B. Jordan takes on the dual role of twins “Smoke” and “Stack.” He was rewarded for his impressive performances with an Oscar nomination in the Best Actor category. Jordan made his breakthrough on television in HBO’s “The Wire” and on the big screen with “Fruitvale Station.” Since then, Jordan has appeared in iconic franchises such as “Creed,” “Fantastic Four” and “Black Panther.” He has long worked with “Sinners” director Ryan Coogler, who also received his first Best Director Oscar nomination this year.

Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas received an Academy Award nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category. In “Sentimental Value,” for which she is nominated, Lilleaas plays Agnes, the sister of lead actress Renate Reinsve’s Nora and daughter of Skarsgård’s Gustav. She will be competing against her fellow “Sentimental Value” star, Elle Fanning, for the award. Lilleaas won the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress earlier this year.

A seasoned industry veteran, Delroy Lindo received his first Oscar nomination for his supporting role as Delta Slim in “Sinners.” Lindo began his career in the mid-1970s as a theatrical stage actor before making his big breakthrough in the film industry in Spike Lee’s “Crooklyn.” The British-American actor and Lee would go on to collaborate on several projects, including “Clockers” and “Malcolm X.” Lindo has previously been nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play.

Another “Sinners” star, Wunmi Mosaku, is nominated for her first Academy Award. Mosaku is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for playing Annie. She has already won the Gotham Independent Film Award for Outstanding Supporting Performance for the role. Alongside her Oscar nomination, Mosaku is also up for an Actors Award (formerly known as the SAG-AFTRA Awards). She has been acting since 2006, when she played Helen of Troy in “The Women of Troy.” She is set to appear in Aaron Sorkin’s next film: “The Social Reckoning.”

Brazilian actor Wagner Moura made a big splash on the small screen with “Narcos,” for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2016. Moura then returned to the Globes in 2026 to pick up a win in the Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his lead role in “The Secret Agent,” for which he is also nominated for an Oscar. The movie also won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language film, making it the first Brazilian film to win the award. Moura also received the award for Best Actor at last year’s Cannes Film Festival for his turn in “The Secret Agent.”

Renate Reinsve is the third woman in her “Sentimental Value” cast to earn a first-time Oscar nomination. The Norwegian actress garnered awards buzz for her role in Joachim Trier’s “The Worst Person in the World” in 2021, winning the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress. In “Sentimental Value,” also directed by Trier,” she stars as the lead: Nora. Reinsve, Lilleass and Fanning all bounce off of each other beautifully in the heart-touching film.

Stellan Skarsgård, an industry titan and another “Sentimental Value” star, is up for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Skarsgård has been acting since 1968, appearing in iconic franchises such as the “Pirate of the Caribbean” films, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the acclaimed Star Wars television show, “Andor.” He’s worked alongside Lars von Trier for several movies and appeared in the “Dune” franchise. For his role in “Sentimental Value,” Skarsgård has already won a Golden Globe.

Multi-hyphenate Teyana Taylor received her first Oscar nomination for playing Perfidia Beverly Hills in “One Battle After Another.” She picked up a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress earlier this year for the performance. Taylor has worked as a choreographer, dancer, singer, model and more, with “One Battle After Another” being her biggest film role to date. The star is set to make her directorial debut with the upcoming film “Get Lite.”
