Adrian Grenier is opening up about why fans won’t see him reprise his role in the highly anticipated sequel to “The Devil Wears Prada” — and it turns out the decision wasn’t up to him.
In an interview with Us Weekly on Friday, March 13, Grenier revealed that he was never contacted about returning to play Nate Cooper, the boyfriend of Anne Hathaway’s character Andy Sachs in the original film.
Grenier Opens Up About Not Being in the Sequel
“I would be bitter if I wasn’t so absolutely thrilled for Anne and the crew, and excited for the sequel myself,” Grenier said. “I’m a fan of the movie, and so I look forward to seeing the sequel as well.”
Still, the actor admitted the news came as a bit of a disappointment.
“So yeah, I mean, obviously, I was disappointed [to not return], but you know, I can’t be in everything,” he added.
Grenier also joked about his character’s controversial reputation among fans over the years.
“I mean, Andy’s moving up, and, you know, I get it. Nate’s the devil, according to some people,” he said with a laugh.
While he won’t appear in the film, the actor still hopes he might get an invitation to celebrate the movie’s release.
“I hope they invite me to the premiere at least, come on!” he joked.
Grenier Has Previously Addressed His Character in the Beloved Film
In the years since the movie’s release, Nate’s character has been the subject of debate among fans.
Many viewers have revisited the story and argued that Nate was unsupportive of Andy’s career ambitions as she worked to succeed in the demanding fashion industry.
Grenier previously addressed that criticism in a 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly, admitting that he eventually understood why some audiences felt that way.
“When that whole thing [about Nate being the ‘real villain’ of the film] first came out, I couldn’t get my head around it,” he said at the time. “Perhaps it was because I wasn’t mature as a man, just as Nate probably could’ve used a little growing up.”
Looking back now, the actor said he recognizes that Andy’s character was evolving while Nate remained stuck.
“Nate hadn’t grown up, but Andy had,” Grenier said. “She needed more out of life, and she was achieving it.”
The New Film Is Released in May
