Popular Sitcom Star & Comedian Reveals What Led to 173-Lb. Weight Loss: See Him Then & Now

For years, Billy Gardell’s comic timing has made fans fall in love with him. But behind the laughter, he was quietly dealing with personal struggles. Looking back, Gardell is vulnerably sharing the specific wake-up call that prompted him to choose a new path, describing how a series of health hurdles finally caused him to see his future in a different light.

In a new interview with Extra TV, the Emmy-nominated “Mike & Molly” star spoke honestly about his journey, explaining that it was not one single moment, but a buildup of experiences that finally pushed him to take action.

Gardell spoke openly about his journey, sharing how years of ongoing health challenges ultimately pushed him to make a change.

“It was overweight, smoker, sleep apnea, asthma… I had everything on my bingo card except ‘over 65,’ and that’s what I’m trying to get to,” he said.

For Gardell, the decision went beyond losing weight. It became about his future and being there for the people he loves.

“So I got bariatric surgery… starting to think, you know, I want to be here for my kids and I want to annoy my wife for another 20 years… I want to be there for them, and so I knew there was a culmination of all the right forces pushing me.”

Life After Surgery Has Been About Consistency, Not Perfection

After the surgery in 2021, Gardell revealed that he has worked hard to maintain his weight through steady, realistic changes, choosing progress over perfection.

He admitted the journey has not always been easy, but said consistency has made the biggest difference.

“Nobody’s going to have perfect days all the time, but be more consistent than you aren’t. I had a wonderful food therapist who really changed my mindset on that because I would always be saying things like, ‘I’m going to be more disciplined,’ and she’s like, ‘No, discipline is the end result of consistent.’ So, she kind of framed different things in my mind and my relationship with food… Changing those things between your ears, you can change anything.”

Childhood Struggles Shaped His Relationship With Food

Speaking to People in December 2025, Gardell also reflected on how his relationship with food began early in life and was shaped by difficult experiences at home.

He described himself as a “chubby” kid, carrying more than just weight as he navigated challenges growing up.

“I had a lot of responsibility heaped on me at 14 to help provide for the family, and the second stepfather that we had in the house was not a kind person,” he said. “I think I put on this extra weight as some kind of safety armor.”

Looking back, Gardell said those early years deeply influenced how he coped.

“When my parents got divorced, I had a pretty abusive second stepfather … and so I started putting on weight,” he shared. “I caught some beatings, and when you do that, you have to protect yourself.”

Turning His Journey Into Comedy & Looking Ahead

Today, Gardell is turning his personal journey into something he can share with others, bringing it to the stage through his “Less Is More” stand-up tour.

He admitted that while the travel side of touring can be tiring, performing still brings him a deep sense of fulfillment. He told Extra, “The old man in me doesn’t want to travel, but the performance is great. I just don’t want to go to the airport.”

He also expressed excitement about “Mike & Molly” finding a new audience as it arrives on Netflix.

“I’m excited about that because hopefully we’ll catch a new generation of younger viewers that will dig into that show because I think it’s a classic.”

When it comes to a potential reboot, Gardell said he would be open to returning, noting that both he and co-star Melissa McCarthy have embraced healthier lifestyles in recent years.

Looking ahead, his focus remains clear, staying healthy for the people who matter most in his life.

“They want me around longer, God bless them,” he said. “When a man knows what he’s fighting for, he’s capable of doing some amazing things. And those two are worth fighting for.”

His journey now reflects a simple goal: to live longer and live better for his family.
