Iconic 1980s actor Corey Feldman has been reflecting on this year’s Oscars tribute to the late movie director Rob Reiner. Specifically, the star has insinuated he wished he’d been part of the segment.
Reiner, 78, was tragically found dead at his home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, on Sunday, December 14 last year. His wife, Michel Singer, 70, was found alongside him. The couple’s son, Nick Reiner, was arrested later that day on suspicion of murder. The case is ongoing.
Feldman, 54, played Teddy Duchamp in Reiner’s brilliant 1986 coming-of-age drama movie “Stand by Me.” The film was based on Stephen King’s 1982 novella “The Body.”
GettyIt was Billy Crystal who led the segment at the 98th Academy Awards, which were held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles on March 15.
Crystal appeared in three of Reiner’s movies. They are 1984’s mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap,” 1987’s fantasy adventure “The Princess Bride,” and, most notably, 1989’s iconic rom-com “When Harry Met Sally….”
The 78-year-old actor was joined on stage for the segment by a number of fellow stars who worked with Reiner. They included Demi Moore, Meg Ryan, and Feldman’s “Stand By Me” co-stars and friends Wil Wheaton and Jerry O’Connell.
Feldman explained to Entertainment Weekly that he would have liked to have been asked to join them.
Corey Feldman Would’ve Liked to Have Been at ‘Family Reunion’
Corey Feldman was speaking to Entertainment Weekly in a joint interview with his aforementioned “Stand by Me” co-stars, Wil Wheaton and Jerry O’Connell. While he didn’t make a big deal of his omission from the Rob Reiner Oscars tribute, it’s clear he would’ve like to have been there.
Feldman said, “It is what it is.” He then added, “Personally, it felt a little bit like a family reunion I wasn’t invited to, but we’re not going to use this time to go into my feeling about that.”
He went on, saying, “Instead I just want to say that I’m with the rest of us, we’re all very destroyed that things went down the way they did, losing Rob when we all thought he’d be joining us at some point for this tour and it’s a tragedy.”
The actor continued, “We all would’ve loved to be able to say goodbye in our own ways. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. The best way we can say goodbye is honoring him and his work and his film through these tours that we’re doing and these interviews and getting people to take the moment and time to acknowledge the history of his work and art that he created, and hopefully going out there to celebrate him one last time on a big screen where it deserves to be seen.”
When Reiner passed away, Feldman took to his Instagram account to share his thoughts with his 271,000 followers. In the post, Feldman wrote, “#RIPROBREINER I NEVER IMAGINED U BEING GONE LIKE THIS, WE NEVER GOT 2 SAY GOODBYE, BUT I KNOW U CAN FINALLY MAKE THE ANGELS LAUGH IN JEW HEAVEN! GOD BLESS! AND #LOVE FOREVER!”
‘Stand by Me’ Is Currently Back in Theaters
The one collaboration between Rob Reiner and Corey Feldman is back in theaters.
As of March 27, the above-mentioned “Stand by Me” is back on the big screen to celebrate its 40th anniversary. It hit theaters in the United States on August 22, 1986.
Feldman was tagged by Sony, along with Jerry O’Connell, in their post announcing the news.
Per IMDb, in the film, “A writer recounts a childhood journey with his friends to find the body of a missing boy.”
The tagline on the poster reads, “For some, it’s the last real taste of innocence, and the first real taste of life. But for everyone, it’s the time that memories are made of.”
Along with Feldman, O’Connell, and Wil Wheaton, “Stand by Me” starred River Phoenix, Kiefer Sutherland, and Richard Dreyfuss.
If you’ve never seen it before, we strongly recommend doing so. Even if you have, don’t miss the chance to see it on the big screen. It’s brilliant and boasts an impressive 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
