Formula 1 Season Faces Early Calendar Disruption

Formula 1 has made a decision about two upcoming races, announcing that the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia Grand Prix’s have been canceled due to the war in Iran.

The races were set to take place on April 12 and April 19, but will no longer be happening. The next Grand Prix is Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix, followed by the Japanese Grand Prix at the end of March. But then there will be a five-week break before the racers compete again at the Miami Grand Prix on May 3.

These races are canceled at this time, but ESPN writes that the “events could be run at another stage this year.”

“While several alternatives were considered, it was ultimately decided that no substitutions will be made in April. The FIA Formula 2, FIA Formula 3 and F1 Academy rounds will also not take place during their scheduled times,” Formula 1 said in a statement. “The decision has been taken in full consultation with Formula One Group, local promoters and our Member Clubs in the region.”

ESPN further added that the decision to cancel the Bahrain race was “straightforward,” but Saudi Arabia took more time as they wanted the race to go on, but F1 “did not want to risk a situation where an escalation closer to the race took place with freight and personnel already in the country.”

In the first race of the season, it was Mercedes who dominated as George Russell took first place, followed by his teammate Kimi Antonelli in second place and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in third.

Lando Norris, who was the 2025 World Champion, came in fifth place, while Red Bull’s Max Verstappen made an impressive comeback, fighting from 20th place to finish in sixth.

However, one of the most shocking moments was when McLaren’s Oscar Piastri crashed into a barrier before the formation lap, knocking him out before the race even began.
