Released almost exactly 33 years ago in February 1993, “Groundhog Day” has established itself as one of Bill Murray’s finest comic performances and is now widely regarded as one of the best comedy films of all time. Even the term Groundhog Day has become part of pop culture.
To celebrate the actual event that the movie is set around, which takes place every February 2, here’s the cast of “Groundhog Day” and what they’ve been up to since the film first hit cinema screens.
Bill Murray as Phil Connors
GettyMurray is the central character in “Groundhog Day,” playing the weatherman Phil, who is stuck in a time loop perpetually reliving February 2 after traveling to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania in order to cover the Groundhog Day event there.
When he isn’t playing golf, Murray has continued to act over the last three decades. Some of his most high-profile roles include “Lost in Translation,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” and ‘Zombieland.” He has also lent his voice to animated projects, including the 2004 film adaptation of “Garfield” and the 2016 remake of “The Jungle Book.”

GettyAndie MacDowell’s role in “Groundhog Day” was effectively to play Phil’s boss and love interest as producer Rita Hanson. She had leading roles in the likes of “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “The Muse,” “Unstrung Heroes,” and “Multiplicity.” She has also had roles in more recent films, including “Magic Mike XXL” and “The Other Zoey,” in addition to the television series “Jane by Design.”

Stephen Tobolowsky was responsible for the role of Ned, the annoying insurance salesman who also seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time to get on Phil’s nerves.
Tobolowsky has starred in a raft of movies over the years, including “Memento,” “Freaky Friday, and “The Time Traveler’s Wife.” In terms of television series, he has appeared in “Glee,” “Californication,” “Silicon Valley,” and “Archer.”

Buster Green is the character played by Bill Murray’s brother Brian Doyle-Murray. At a pivotal point in the film, he choked on a stubborn piece of steak and is only saved by the intervention of Phil.
Although he is probably best known for his work before “Groundhog Day,” he has worked on a number of projects since its release. This includes voicing The Flying Dutchman in Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob SquarePants.” He has also appeared in “The Middle,” “Veep,” “Sullivan & So,” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”
