Savannah Guthrie Plans to Step Away From Winter Olympics Coverage Amid Search for Missing Mom

“Today” show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie is reportedly stepping back from her planned coverage of the 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony after authorities reported that her mother, Nancy Guthrie, has gone missing in Arizona, according to Page Six

The decision highlights a deeply personal and emotional moment for Guthrie, who has paused her broadcasting responsibilities to focus on her family amid a concerning and active law-enforcement search.

Guthrie Was Set to Be at the Opening Ceremonies

Guthrie had been scheduled to co-host NBC’s coverage of the Milan-Cortina Winter Games, including the opening ceremony alongside Terry Gannon and contributions from snowboarding champion Shaun White.

However, sources tell Page Six that she will no longer travel to Italy for the event as her family continues to seek answers about her mom’s disappearance.

“There is no way Savannah will be there,” the source said.

Nancy, 84, was last seen at her home in the Catalina Foothills area north of Tucson, Arizona on the evening of Jan. 31, 2026, and was reported missing the next day.

Authorities have described the circumstances as “very concerning,” noting that she requires daily medication and has limited mobility — adding urgency to the search effort.

Investigators have now treated the home as a crime scene, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, indicating they do not believe Nancy left voluntarily.

Guthrie Released a Statement

In response to her absence from the “Today” show and the upcoming Olympics coverage, Guthrie released a statement through her co-hosts expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support.

The statement read, “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom.”

“We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900,” it concluded.

Guthrie Has a Close Relationship With Her Mom

Throughout her career, Guthrie has often spoken warmly about the influence her mother has had on her life — from supporting her early aspirations in journalism to serving as a steadfast presence through personal milestones.

In past interviews, she credited Nancy with encouraging her to pursue opportunities that eventually led her to become one of television’s most trusted news anchors.

Guthrie’s temporary withdrawal from Olympic duties has drawn an outpouring of support from fans and colleagues.

Friends & Fans Rally Around Guthrie

“Today” show host Hoda Kotb shared a simple Instagram message reading “Hope,” which many interpreted as a sign of solidarity.

Viewers have also sent prayers and encouragement across social platforms, emphasizing empathy for Guthrie’s situation and wishing for her mother’s safe return.

NBC has covered the disappearance story on Today, though Guthrie herself has not appeared on set since the report.

Fellow anchors, including Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones, have spoken about the case’s seriousness and reiterated the family’s request for public assistance.

As the Winter Olympics begin Feb. 6, Guthrie’s absence underscores how life’s most important moments don’t always align with scheduled events — and how family remains at the center of what matters most.

Fans and colleagues continue to rally behind her, hoping for a positive resolution and Nancy’s safe return.
