The tradition of Groundhog Day continued on Monday, Feb. 2, when Punxsutawney Phil reappeared from his burrow in Pennsylvania. In front of thousands of spectators at the Gobbler’s Knob, Phil’s handlers retrieved him from his nestling to make his anticipated prediction.
At last — the fate of winter to spring was revealed! According to an Instagram video shared by The Weather Channel, Phil’s handlers shared that the famed groundhog did indeed see his shadow, meaning that there will be six more weeks of winter before spring weather arrives.
Punxsutawney Phil Sees His Shadow on 2026 Groundhog Day
The announcement of Phil’s decision caused the large crowd of onlookers to erupt in a mix of cheers and boos, as many weren’t thrilled that warmer days aren’t in the near future.
The official website for the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club explained that when Phil reappears from his hole every year on Feb. 2, after a long winter sleep, he uses the weather to make his prediction. “If the day is cloudy and, hence, shadowless, he takes it as a sign of spring and stays above ground,” the website states.
Legend has it that Phil’s “elixir of life” has kept him alive for over 130 years. The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club website explains that Phil is fed the elixir by club members every summer. “The elixir is made from a secret recipe and provides Phil with the potion that has sustained his longevity and youthful good looks,” the website says.
Since 1886, the Groundhog Club Inner Circle has joined together in the early morning while wearing tuxedos and top hats to help relay Phil’s predictions.
Punxsutawney Phil Has a Groundhog Family of His Own
Although Groundhog Day revolves around Phil, the adorable furry fella has a family of his own. In March 2024, the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club announced that Phil and his wife, Phyllis, welcomed two baby groundhogs.
“We have Babies!! The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club is very excited to announce that Phil and Phyllis have given birth to two healthy baby Groundhogs,” the Facebook statement said.
Thomas Dunkel, president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, shared with CBS News at the time that Phyllis giving birth was an unexpected surprise. “When we went in to feed them their fresh fruits and vegetables, we found Phyllis with two little baby groundhogs. It was very unexpected; we had no idea that she was pregnant,” Dunkel told the outlet.
