Classic Novel ‘Jane Eyre’ Getting TV Adaptation With Breakout Star in Title Role

As Emerald Fennellโ€™s divisive adaptation of Emily Brontรซโ€™s “Wuthering Heights” continues to flock millions of viewers to the movie theater, another Brontรซ adaptation is reportedly in the works.

According to Variety and Deadline, the UK production company Working Title has officially cast Aimee Lou Wood as the lead of their series adaptation of Charlotte Brontรซโ€™s “Jane Eyre.” Also linked to the project is “Succession” writer and WGA Award-winner Miriam Battye.

Following her beloved and award-nominated role in Season 3 of “The White Lotus,” Wood will be shifting gears and becoming Jane Eyre in the series.

The novel, which was first published in 1847, follows young orphan Jane in a first-person narrative style as she grows into adulthood and develops a relationship with the brooding and charming Mr. Rochester. At the time, the novel was considered revolutionary for Jane’s unwavering search for love, independence and social equality in 19th-century England.ย

“Jane Eyre” has inspired many film and TV adaptations in the past. The last rendition was in 2006, in the TV series starring Ruth Wilson as Jane and Toby Stephens as Mr. Rochester.

Five years after that, in 2011, Mia Wasikowska took on the role in Cary Fukanagaโ€™s film alongside Michael Fassbender as Mr. Rochester. Samantha Morton also played Jane in the 1997 version alongside Ciaran Hinds.

Since scoring her first Emmy, Golden Globe and Actor Award nominations for her role in “The White Lotus” Season 3, Wood has kept herself busy. Her latest projects have been the TV series “Daddy Issues” with David Morrissey and the miniseries “Film Club.”

She was also recently cast as George Harrison’s photographer ex-wife Pattie Boyd in the four-feature yet-to-be-titled Beatles movies, directed by Sam Mendes. Joseph Quinn is set to play Harrison.

Prior to “The White Lotus” fame, Wood won over fans as the spunky and compassionate Aimee Gibbs in “Sex Education.” For that role, she won her first BAFTA Award in 2021 for Best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme.

Since the news broke of her casting, Wood has collaborated on an Instagram post with Deadline sharing the news. She also reposted the photo on her Instagram Stories tagging Battye with a series of pink hearts.

In the comment section, fans are loving the news. “The period romance girlies are being FED,” wrote one follower. “She will make an incredible Jane! ๐Ÿ™Œ ” wrote another commenter. “How did I not see this coming?”
