Mark Hamill Looks Unrecognizable in ‘Secret’ Role for New Movie

Star Wars” legend and celebrated voice actor Mark Hamill has shared behind-the-scenes images from “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants” that show his dramatic transformation for live-action segments of the film where he portrayed The Flying Dutchman.

Mark Hamill Reveals He Had To Keep Role a Secret

While it was public knowledge that Hamill was voicing The Flying Dutchman in “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants,” it wasn’t revealed that he would also play the character on screen. In a recent Instagram post, the actor included a series of images that show how the makeup artists on the film were able to change his appearance so much.

The photographs show Hamill transforming to the degree that it is hard to recognize that it is actually him playing the character. He has a large beard and a pointed hooked noise, which both change his look significantly.

He said, “For 18 months, I had to keep the secret that I didn’t just voice ‘The Flying Dutchman’ in the SpongeBob movie, but I also played him in live-action sequences.”

Hamill continued, “The hours it took flew by thanks to superb makeup artists Gage Munster & Marcel Banks who were both so kind AND hilarious. Thanks fellas!”

The effects were so well done that many viewers didn’t even realize that it was Hamill playing The Flying Dutchman in the film. One user wrote, “Dude, I can’t even see you under the makeup. Just the eyes. That’s so cool!”

“Whoa! Unrecognizable! How cool is that?” said another user, while a different commentator added, “I knew that face looked familiar while I was watching the movie! Such great makeup!”

Mark Hamill Started His Acting Career in Soap Operas

Hamill also recently explained that he began his career as an actor in soap operas. While appearing on “Live With Kelly & Mark,” the actor said that he starred as Kent Murray on “General Hospital back in the ’70s.

“I have a lot in common with you,” Hamill said to Mark Consuelos, who rose to fame on “All My Children.”

He continued, “It was a great education to learn how to find your light, how to hit your marks. I still have great memories of working there.”

His role in the soap opera came to an end in 1973 but his big break was just around the corner, with Hamill going on to portray Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars” just a few years later.
