McConaughey opened up in his memoir Greenlights about being abducted at 18, an ordeal that left him unconscious and assaulted before he managed to escape. In a new interview with The Guardian, he called it the most vulnerable moment of his life, but said he feels fortunate to have survived.

“I got out relatively unscathed. It could have been worse is what I’m saying,” he shared, emphasizing his gratitude.

McConaughey admitted the assault left him feeling completely powerless. “I’ve never felt as helpless as in that moment. I’ve never felt so vulnerable and unable to do anything about it,” he recalled. The actor credits what he calls “divine intervention” for allowing him to wake up and escape before the situation became worse.

The actor acknowledged that the ordeal crushed his youthful innocence. “Did it crush some innocence of mine? That my nice guy, young Matthew, believed in the innocence of the world and no one would try to do harm to me or anyone else unless I provoked it? Sure,” he reflected. He admitted the experience was defining in ways he still struggles to understand fully.

Despite the trauma, McConaughey went on to build a celebrated Hollywood career. He rose to fame in films like “A Time to Kill” and became a rom-com favorite in “The Wedding Planner,” “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” and “Failure to Launch.”

After stepping away from acting to avoid typecasting, he made a dramatic comeback with serious roles in “Killer Joe,” “Mud,” “Magic Mike,” and “Dallas Buyers Club,” earning him the 2013 Academy Award for Best Actor.

McConaughey calls the terrifying event from his youth a moment that redefined him, but one he ultimately survived. “Talk about divine intervention,” he said. “It was a beautiful reminder of how fragile life is, and how lucky I was to escape.”
