British actor Michael Sheen, best known for his roles in the likes of “Good Omens,” “Frost/Nixon,” and “The Queen,” is set to take over from Richard Osman as host of the BBC quiz show “House of Games.”
BBC News announced that Sheen would replace Osman, taking over for the next season that will be broadcast later this year. The move follows the announcement that Osman was stepping down from the role that he has held for nine years and more than 800 episodes.
Michael Sheen Set to Host ‘House of Games’
In a statement released on the official Instagram page for “House of Games,” Sheen revealed that he is excited to begin work on the show and is aware of pressure that comes with replacing Osman as the host.
He said, “Quite literally very large shoes to fill but as a huge fan of the show, I’m incredibly excited to be able to move into the House and at long last see my silhouette on a fondue set.”
Meanwhile, Osman welcomed Sheen to the role in his own message posted to Instagram. He wrote, “Beyond thrilled to be handing the #HouseOfGames keys over to the one and only Michael Sheen.”
Osman continued, “I promise to put the hoover round before he arrives. Best of luck Michael, you’re such a great choice, and I know you, and the viewers, will have an amazing time!”
BBC commissioning executive Caroline O’Neill also released a statement about the change in host, saying, “We’re delighted to have Michael Sheen stepping into the ‘House of Games.’ His charisma and passion for playfulness will be a joy for audiences and we’ve no doubt he’ll relish throwing himself into a fiercely fought Answer Smash.”
Richard Osman Leaves ‘House of Games’ After 800 Episodes
The news comes just under two weeks after Osman first revealed that he was leaving “House of Games.” The television producer, host, podcaster, and best-selling author explained at the start of March that he was stepping down in order to focus on his other work.
“I’ve loved it. And of course I met my wife through it as well,” he added. “It’s just with the writing, there comes a point, you know, where you have to hand it over. I’ve loved doing it so much and I’ll be gutted when I don’t do it any more.”
Osman has helped create and produce some of the most successful quiz shows in the United Kingdom but is probably best known as the author behind the hit “Thursday Murder Club” novel series. The franchise has since been adapted into a film by Netflix that stars Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan.
